ARLINGTON, Texas (September 21, 2024) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's tennis team took on the challenge of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) South Central Regional Championships hosted by Dallas Baptist University and walked away with championships in the Singles Flight B Back Draw, Doubles Flight B Main Draw, and Doubles Flight B Back Draw.

The Falcons competed with other D2 players from around the region in bracket play that extend from Thursday, September 19, through Saturday, September 21.

In all, 82 players faced off over the duration in what was a 64-person main draw for singles and a 32-team main draw for doubles at the three-day ITA Regional Tournament. The ITA Regional provides major stakes in the biggest test of the fall for the women's program. The winners of both the singles and doubles draws automatically qualified for next month's ITA Cup, hosted in Rome, Georgia.

In the Singles Flight A Main Draw, Brooke Runyan and Teodora Vrucan both advanced to the round of 32. In the first round, Runyan defeated Axelle Jacquemin (Lubbock Christian) 6-3, 6-3 while Vrucan took down the No. 16-seed, Maya Adler (Lubbock Christian), in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4). In the round of 32, Runyan won her first set but came up short in a third-set super tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6), against the No. 4-seed, Hannah Yip (Midwestern State). Vrucan, meanwhile, fell 6-3, 6-2 against Emily Buchanan (Dallas Baptist) in her round of 32 matchup.

Then in the Singles Flight A Back Draw, Mattea Bowe and Tuva Asplund both advanced to the round of 16. Bowe defeated Caini Wang (Western New Mexico) 6-2, 6-2 and Asplund won 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 over Megan Zeng (Texas, Dallas) in the round of 32. In the round of 16, however, Bowe won her first set but fell in a third-set super tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6), to Elisa Rodriguez (Saint Mary's) while Asplund dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision against Annika Anderson-Gomez (Texas A&M-Kingsville).

In the Singles Flight B Back Draw, Dinethya Dharmaratne matched up against teammate Fanny Bergstrom in the semifinals, and Dharmaratne came out on top by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Then in the final against Anouk Terpin (Texas A&M-Kingsville), it was again Dharmaratne who emerged victorious with a 6-4, 6-2 decision in UTPB's lone match played on Saturday, the final day of the tournament.

In the Doubles Flight A Main Draw, the pairings of Asplund/Bergstrom and Bowe/Paige Bott each advanced to the round of 16. In the round of 32, Asplund/Bergstrom defeated Annalena Noll/Guadalupe Tocci (Texas A&M-Kingsville) 8-3 and Bowe/Bott won 8-4 over Jenna Payne/Isabella Quintero (Dallas Baptist). In the round of 16, however, Asplund/Bergstrom fell 8-3 against the No. 3-seed, Selina Wu/Karen Kondo (Saint Mary's), and Bowe/Bott also lost 8-3 against the No. 5-seed, Jenna Goessel/Anastasia Uspenskaia (Cameron).

UTPB then earned a pair of titles in the Doubles Flight B. In the Doubles Flight B Main Draw, Vrucan/Sophia Rashid defeated Ella Hester/Anouk Terpin (Texas A&M-Kingsville) 8-3 in the quarterfinals, took down Sarah Stewart/Andrea Delgado (Dallas Baptist) 8-5 in the semifinals, and then won the final with an 8-1 score over Alexandra Luders/Maizy Adams (Lubbock Christian) on Friday.

In the Doubles Flight B Back Draw, Viktoriia Sholudko/Dharmaratne defeated Reika Nagai/Kendall Curley (Texas, Dallas) in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-2), in the semifinals before winning 8-5 in the final over another Lubbock Christian duo, Sophia Shepherd/Maya Adler, also on Friday.
