Strength and Conditioning

Mission
 The University of Texas Permian Basin strength and conditioning programs supports both the department of athletics and University. In addition, the University of Texas Permian Basin strength and conditioning program fosters a positive, safe, challenging, training environment to help all student-athletes maximize their athletic potential.
 
 Our approach allows coaches and athletes to work together towards developing an athlete’s full physical and mental potential while reducing the chance of injury.
 
Philosophy
 
Strength Is King
 
The foundation of our strength and conditioning philosophy is developing fundamental strength qualities with our student-athletes. Improving strength has been shown through scientific literature to decrease an athlete's risk for injury, improve durability, and support enhanced performance in the field of play. Additionally, speed, power, and endurance are all supported by strength and further supports our focus on this quality.
 
Safety First
 
This is our first consideration regarding loading progression, exercise selection, and our adherence to best-practices from our profession's governing bodies. Concurrently, it is unsafe for our student-athletes not to train; as it is unsafe to put a physically unprepared athlete on the field of play.
 
Continuity
 
Student-athletes are provided with appropriate training programs year-round to provide consistent progress as well as ensure readiness for practice and competition seasons.
 
Exercise vs. Training
 
Exercise is defined as physical activity. Training differs from exercise in that training is planned, progressive exercise that results in a specific adaptation in the body. Training at UTPB is guided by training age, which may or may not be congruent with biological age. Exercise selection and programming reflects a focus on simple before complex and general before specific training. Our exercise selection focuses on the fundamental, ground-based human movements: squat, push, pull, hinge, lunge, and carry.
 
Master the Movement
 
In all exercises, our student-athletes must master the movement. Proper technique is paramount for both safe training and sustained progress over time, and student-athletes will only be progressed through training as technique allows.
