Falcons fall to No. 17 Rattlers on Senior Day

ODESSA, Texas (April 19, 2026) – Playing in its final game at home this season, The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team fell 15-6 vs. No. 17 St. Mary's University on Sunday. It was also Senior Day for No. 14 Jarren Lewis, No. 16 Tanner Hedrick and No. 31 Aidan Becker.

Lewis took the start behind the plate and drew two walks while Hedrick started in center field. Becker, meanwhile, recorded the final two outs from the mound during UTPB's 17-6 win during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The game on Sunday started off with both teams scoring in the first inning. After a leadoff triple down the right field line kicked off a two-run first inning for StMU, UTPB tried to tie answer in the bottom half as Carlos Chavez singled to right field with two outs and two runners in scoring position. Daylon Jefcoats scored from third on the hit by Chavez, but Demetrius Deramus was just tagged out trying to slide in under the tag, keeping the Rattlers in front by one run (2-1).

The Rattlers then scored four runs on five hits in the third inning (went up 6-1), setting a tone for big innings throughout the game, and then a diving catch by the Rattlers' left fielder put the finishing touches on a bottom of the third inning that also featured a 4-6-3 double play.

After two straight scoreless innings, UTPB got a run in on an RBI-single through the left side by Braeden Dyck in the bottom of the fourth (down 7-2), but could not capitalize on a potentially bigger inning as a nice running catch by the center field heading toward the right center field gap ended the inning with the bases loaded.

StMU faced three Falcon pitchers and put up its second four-run inning in the top of the fifth to break the game open (up 11-2), scoring the first run of the inning on a wild pitch and the last two on RBI-doubles.

The Rattlers had 11 runs on 12 hits through the first four and a half innings, but would be held hitless over the next two innings by Kaden Johnson and Timmy LaChappa.

Meanwhile, StMU's starting pitcher, Eric Tenery, held UTPB to four hits, two runs, three walks and four strikeouts in the first four innings.

UTPB chased Tenery with three straight one-out hits in the fifth inning as a single through the right side by Alden Quintanilla was followed by a double to right center by Deramus to put two runners in scoring position, and then a single to right center by Chavez scored both runners to make it 11-4. Tenery would finish by throwing exactly 100 pitches in 4.1 innings pitched.

Facing a new arm for the Rattlers with one out and still in the fifth inning, UTPB kept hitting, getting another RBI-single by Dyck. Then after Cruz Garcia was tagged out at home trying to score on a wild pitch, the Falcons continued the inning with a walk by Lewis and an RBI-single up the middle by pinch hitter Joshua Estrada to score Dyck from second base and make it 11-6.

The four-run, five-hit fifth inning for UTPB was a good response after StMU's second four-run inning in the top half, but from there, both offenses slowed down. After both teams scored four runs in the fifth inning, both teams went scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Johnson pitched a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, a lineout double play to third base turned by the Falcons' defense highlighted the top of the seventh, then a 1-4 caught stealing thrown by LaChappa at second base ended the top of the eighth.

However, a leadoff home run to right field by Blake Allen broke up the stretch of scoreless innings and allowed the Rattlers to double up the Falcons (12-6) in the top of the ninth. In the end, it would be the third four-run inning of the game produced by the StMU offense, and then Derek Maples, the Rattlers' game-two starter, finished off the bottom of the ninth with his third straight 1-2-3 inning to pick up the three-inning save.

UTPB falls to 13-33 both overall and in the Lone Star Conference while StMU improves to 35-11, wins its seventh series in a row, and picks up its 11th series win in 12 total series this season.
