LUBBOCK, Texas (April 6, 2025) – Just one day after a tough 5-2 loss against No. 44-ranked St. Mary's University, The University of Texas Permian Basin women's tennis team swept the doubles matches and battled No. 19-ranked Lubbock Christian University to a one-point decision (4-3) on Sunday at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
UTPB swept all three doubles matches as
Tuva Asplund and
Teodora Vrucan defeated Mariia Koroleva and Andrea De Bernardo 6-2 at No. 2 doubles,
Paige Bott and
Brooke Runyan defeated Anastasiia Opolska and AnaMaria Zoric 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and
Fanny Bergstrom and
Sophia Rashid beat Oshini Herath and Alexandra Luders 7-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Bergstrom defeated Maya Adler 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, Bott fell 7-6, 6-4 against Zoric at No. 5 singles, and Runyan was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Opolska (No. 32 nationally-ranked) at No. 1 singles.
The match was tied at 2-2 before
Dinethya Dharmaratne fell in a competitive and pivotal match against Herath, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.
Then two three-setters at No. 2 and No. 3 singles decided the match. Vrucan defeated Koroleva 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, her third singles win in as many seasons against LCU, but
Rhea Singh came up short against De Bernardo (No. 65 nationally-ranked) at No. 2 singles, falling 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to give the win to the Lady Chaparrals.
In the end, UTPB just could not overcome LCU's singles depth.
Despite the loss, the Falcons won more matches (5) than the Lady Chaps (4) on the day.

- UTPB falls to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the Lone Star Conference and showed major improvement from a 6-1 defeat against the Lady Chaps last season.
- LCU improves to 13-4 and 3-1 with its lone loss in conference play being a close 4-3 defeat against No 2 nationally-ranked Midwestern State University (Mar. 28). The Falcons have played the Lady Chaps the closest during their current three-match winning streak.
Next Up: The UTPB women's tennis team is back in action next week for a pair of nationally-ranked LSC road matches at No. 43 Texas A&M University-Kingsville at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, and No. 28 Angelo State University at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April. 13. The Falcons will then return home Easter Weekend to host three straight home matches at the Bush Tennis Center. The Falcons have a nonconference match against McMurry University scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, followed by Sul Ross State University at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 18, and Western New Mexico University at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19.
