TYLER, Texas (October 25, 2026) – There were six women from UT Permian Basin competing in the 64-player singles draw for the 2026 ITA Division II South Central Regional Championship hosted by UT Tyler. The first round of the tournament got underway on Thursday, October 22. The tournament ran through Sunday, October 25, and also included a consolation bracket. The highlight of the tournament for the Falcons was Fanny Bergstrom advancing to the semifinals of the singles back draw.

The teams that participated in the ITA South Central Regionals were: UTPB, Angelo State, Cameron, Lubbock Christian, Midwestern State, St. Mary's, UT Dallas, UT Tyler, and Western New Mexico.

The six-round singles tournament began with a round of 64 on Thursday, with the winners advancing to the finals on Sunday. The winners from both singles and doubles play automatically qualify to participate in the Division II National Championships.

UTPB went 0-6 in the round of 64 in the singles main draw, with Paige Sitanggang and Dinethya Dharmaratne both forcing third-set super tiebreakers. Sitanggang fell 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-3) vs. Sarah Wooten (St. Mary's) while Dharmaratne was the lone Falcon to win her first set before falling 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 1-0 (10-6) against Allison Blanco (St. Mary's).

In the singles back draw, UTPB went 2-6 in the round of 32 with Bergstrom winning 6-3, 6-2 vs. Lina Mueller (Western New Mexico) and Sitanggang winning 6-1, 6-0 vs. Alexa Irazabal (Lubbock Christian). Meanwhile, Dharmaratne again won her first set before falling in a third-set super tiebreaker for the second match in a row, 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-5) vs. Sabrina Pugh (UT Tyler). In the round of 16, Sitanggang came up short, 6-4, 6-4, vs. Daniela Maldonado (Cameron) while Bergstrom advanced with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (14-12) win in a third-set super tiebreaker over Jasmine Crain (Midwestern State). In the quarterfinals on Saturday, Bergstrom battled Eva Guta (Western New Mexico) and came out on top 6-3, 6-3, but then fell in two tough sets, 6-4, 6-4, against Gianna Graci (UT Dallas) in the semifinals.

The Falcons also had three of the 30 doubles teams competing this week.

In the doubles main draw, UTPB went 1-2 in the round of 32. Dinethya Dharmaratne/Paige Sitanggang (UTPB) upset No. 6-seed Shiori Takeda/Allison Blanco (St. Mary's) 9-7 while Fanny Bergstrom/Alice Bolton fell by the same score of 9-7 vs. Naghely Garcia Galian/Lili Kovacs-Sebestyen (Lubbock Christian). Then in the round of 16, Dharmaratne/Sitanggang came up short by a score of 8-4 against Claudia Di Leonardo/Luisa Moraes (UT Tyler).

Lastly, in the doubles back draw, Bergstrom/Bolton won 8-6 over Alexa Garcia/Alexa Lugo Ruiz (Cameron) and then matched up against No. 6-seed Takeda/Blanco (St. Mary's) in the quarterfinals, where the Falcons fell by a score of 8-3. After being upset by Dharmaratne/Sitanggang in the first round of the main draw, Takeda/Blanco would go on to win the back draw.

UPTB Head Coach Chris Tolson said, "The ladies competed well, just had some tough draws, coming up a bit short. Fanny had a good weekend winning two matches in the consolation draw after competing well against the No. 1 seed. Paige and Dinethya did well in doubles winning their first match and then losing a close one in the second round."
