Women’s tennis finishes tough stretch with defeat at No. 31 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas (April 13, 2025) – Playing in its fifth-straight conference match against a team ranked in the top-50 of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, The University of Texas Permian Basin women's team fell 7-0 at No. 31 Angelo State University on Sunday at the ASU Tennis Complex.

Fanny Bergstrom and Rhea Singh (No. 1 doubles) and No. 50 nationally-ranked Paige Bott and Brooke Runyan (No. 2 doubles) both fell 6-3 as the Falcons were swept in doubles for the second match in a row.

Dinethya Dharmaratne won her first set at No. 6 singles before coming up just short in a battle in a third-set super tiebreaker, falling 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) versus Mary-June Quinn, who earned her first-career victory.

Bott fell in a close second set at No. 5 singles, falling 6-0, 7-5 versus Ivet Stancheva

Runyan fell 6-2, 6-2 versus freshman and No. 56 nationally-ranked Margaux Rene, who was playing at No. 1 singles for the first time in her career, while Singh lost 6-1, 6-3 against No. 75 Eva Schwartz at No. 2 singles.

For the second year in a row, the Falcons fell 7-0 versus the Rambelles and fell in straight sets in five of the six singles contests.

  • UTPB falls to 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the Lone Star Conference. It was the second day in a row the Falcons lost a match during its opponents' Senior Day.
  • ASU snaps a six-match losing streak and improves to 13-6 and 2-5. The Belles had started off their 2025 season by setting a new program record by starting the season 12-0. Last season, the Belles made it to the round of the 16 for the first time in program history.
 
Next Up: The Falcons return home during Easter Weekend to host three straight matches at the Bush Tennis Center. The Falcons first have a nonconference match against McMurry University scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, followed by Sul Ross State University at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 18, and then Senior Day against Western New Mexico University at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19.
