ODESSA, Texas (October 22, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team put up 20 shot attempts in each half and set a program record for shots in a match as the Falcons defeated Sul Ross State University by a final score of 2-0 to earn their second Lone Star Conference win of the season on Wednesday night at the UTPB Soccer Field.
Allyson Reed had a pair of shots blocked in the opening two and a half minutes of the match, and then her effort paid off four and a half minutes in when an indirect free kick was awarded to the Falcons after an illegal touch on the Lobos' goalkeeper on a pass back to her from within the box. On the indirect kick,
Cassandra Ramirez tapped it to Reed, who delivered a powerful kick into the upper center of the goal and right past the goalkeeper.
The Falcons totaled eight shot attempts in the first 12 minutes of the match and led 20-0 on shots in the first half.
SRSU got its first corner kick of the match in the 38th minute, and then got its first shot in the 54th minute on a free kick from about 35 yards out.
UTPB was responsible for each of the first 23 shots of the contest.
UTPB doubled its lead in the 63rd minute when
Mikaela Corral sent her shot from right to left across the goal and saw it hit off the post and bounce in.
The Lobos attempted to get on the board late and threatened with 15 minutes remaining when they got past UTPB goalkeeper
Valeria Delgado, but
Ella Bertram was able to chase down the ball and kick it out of bounds. Then in the final five minutes, a shot by the Lobos' Avery Thieman was saved by Delgado before
Natalia Salas stepped in to corral the loose ball and dribble it out of danger.
"It feels great to finally get the result that we felt like was coming," spoke UTPB Head Women's Soccer Coach
Garrett Kull. "It was fantastic to see us show up on the offensive end tonight and put a lot of pressure on Sul Ross. We have some things we still want to clean up, but I couldn't be more proud of this team."
The final shot count was 40-4 as the Falcons set a new program record in the NCAA Division II era for shots in a match. It surpassed the previous record of 36 shots in the team's 8-0 win over McMurry on October 24, 2024. In addition, UTPB's 21 shots on goal were one short of the record (22) set during that match.
Reed would total 17 shots and eight shots on goal while Ramirez had eight and four.
Maria Tarrago and
Mariela Ojeda both had four shot attempts as well.
"In my career I've never seen an attack performance that resulted in 40 shots and over 20 being on target," said Coach Kull. "
Allyson Reed,
Cassandra Ramirez,
Maria Tarrago and
Mariela Ojeda really spearheaded the attack for us, but credit also goes to our midfield for breaking line and getting us into those attacking positions. Our second goal came from two players who aren't typically attacking players, but it shows the work they've put in to help us offensively. The defense also now has gone two matches without allowing a goal, which has just given us the confidence to go forward on the attack."
For SRSU, the 19 saves by goalkeeper Kathy Palmer places her second in school history for the most saves in a single match.
It was the first win for UTPB (3-7-3 overall, 2-7-2 LSC) since September 20, a span of nine matches. It was also the Falcons' second 2-0 win over Sul Ross (2-12-0, 1-9-0) in the two years the Lobos have been a member of the Lone Star Conference.
Lastly, it was the 10th career win as a collegiate head soccer coach for Coach Kull.
"It's obviously special to celebrate any win as a coach, and reaching double digits in my career by having the night we had is special," concluded Coach Kull. "All the credit goes to all the players and staff who have been a part of my journey as a coach. At the end of the day, the players are the ones who win the games, so I hope they enjoy getting to celebrate this moment with me as well."
Heading into its final road trip of the season, UTPB will play at Angelo State University starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 25.
