TYLER, Texas (September 28, 2024) – The University of Texas Permian Basin men's tennis team continued its Fall season this past weekend by sending eight athletes to compete at the ITA South Central Regional Championships at The University of Texas at Tyler.

The main singles draw featured the top 64 singles players in the South Central Region, and the main doubles draw featured the top 32 pairs.

In the singles main draw, UTPB won five of its eight first-round matches and saw Lucas Nitzschke advance to the round of 16 after rolling 6-0, 6-0 over Edgar Mayorga Calva (Dallas Baptist) in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Nitzschke won the opening set but fell by just two points in a heartbreaking third-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), against No. 12-seeded Kelly Giese (Lubbock Christian), who would go on to advance to the semifinals.

No. 4-seeded Jonathan Vega defeated Louie Hein (Saint Mary's) 6-1, 6-3 in his first-round matchup before falling in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-6) against Juan David Duque (Midwestern State) in the round of 32.

Also in the first round, No. 11-seeded Grzegorz Rudnicki defeated Carlo Kern (Texas, Tyler) 6-1, 6-4 but lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to Rhys Edwards (Cameron) in the next round.

In the singles back draw, Jonas Krahofer and Florian Kralik both advanced to the round of 16, where Krahofer defeated Leonardo Fabbri (Saint Mary's) in a tiebreaker in both sets, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6). However in the quarterfinals, Krahofer fell 6-4, 6-3 against Filip Vacula (Midwestern State), who would go on to win the back draw championship.

The highlight of the doubles main draw for the Falcons was No. 3-seed Jonas Krahofer/Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez Ibanez advancing to the semifinals. The UTPB duo first defeated Lucas Castillo-Sanchez/Lincoln Baldonado (Saint Mary's) 8-7 (7-5) in the round of 32, then beat Vicente Preto/Brendan Lock (Cameron) 8-3 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Krahofer/Gonzalez Ibanez took down the No. 6-seed, Andres De Los Rios Kolejewska/Tristan Vigneron Scattarregia (Lubbock Christian), by a score of 8-5. They came up short, however, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), against No. 2-seeded and eventual doubles runners-up Stephen Slocombe/Germano Setti (Midwestern State) in the semifinals.

In the doubles back draw, Jonathan Vega/Lucas Nitzschke defeated Edward Shteyn/Ronav Aviur (Texas, Dallas) 8-1 in the round of 16 and took down No. 7-seeded Malo Poulesquen/Artiom Dorofeev (Texas, Tyler) 8-5 in the quarterfinals, but fell 8-3 to eventual back draw champions Juan David Duque/Jose Marquez (Midwestern State) in the semifinals.

The ITA Regional provides major stakes in the biggest test of the fall. The winners of both singles and doubles draws automatically qualify into next month's ITA Cup, hosted in Rome, Georgia.

This wraps up the fall season for the Falcons who will be back in the spring.
