WICHITA FALLS, Texas (April 5, 2026) – The University of Texas Permian Basin men's tennis team fell 7-0 at No. 19 Midwestern State University on Eastern Sunday as the MSU Tennis Center.
UTPB led 3-2 at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but was only able to pull out the win in the No. 3 spot as Midwestern State won the doubles point. As a team, UTPB is 7-5 at the No. 3 doubles position so far this season.
Philipp Gaurieder and
Joao D'Amorim defeated Cesar Loeches Llamas and Jose Marquez 6-3 at No. 3 doubles while
Andrew Hunsley and
Lucas Nakasato came up short, 6-4, vs. Matthew Earle and Germano Setti in the final match at No. 2 doubles. For Earle and Setti, it was their 10th consecutive doubles win as the pair improved its record to 11-1.
Earlier at No. 1 doubles, the No. 26 nationally-ranked pair of Juan David Duque and Bruno Sanchez swept
Nehal Naidoo and
Kabir Chothani 6-0. During the Fall season, Duque and Sanchez defeated three consecutive seeded pairings and outlasted teammates Earle and Setti in an all-MSU doubles final at the ITA DII Men's South Central Regional Championship. For doubles, Duque and Sanchez are the top duo in the South Central while the pair of Earle and Setti are not far behind, standing No. 4 in the region.
MSU won the first four singles matches to finish in straight sets, but in the last two matches, UTPB won the first set before falling 6-2 in the second set and going to a third-set super tiebreaker.
The closest of the first four singles matches was a 7-2, 7-5 loss by Nakasato against Sanchez, a junior from Spain, at No. 2 singles.
Hunsley fell 6-3, 6-1 vs. Earle at No. 5 singles. Earle, a fifth-year senior from Ireland, was an ITA Cup National Champion at Washburn before transferring to Midwestern State.
D'Amorim battled No. 14 nationally-ranked Setti in a 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) loss at No. 1 singles, and Naidoo gave Duque all he could want in a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (15-13) loss at No. 3 singles. Naidoo led 13-12 before falling in the third-set super tiebreaker. Naidoo had four match points slip away during the match tiebreak, and Duque improved to 8-5 in singles this season and denied the Falcons a single dual-match point while winning for the fifth time in six matches. Setti, a senior from Brazil, reached the quarterfinals and won two of his three singles matches at the prestigious ITA Cup in October. Setti leads the team with an 8-3 record at No. 1 singles and is ranked No. 5 in the South Central region while Duque, a senior from Colombia who is in his fourth season with the Mustangs, is No. 7 in the region.

Team Records:
- UTPB falls to 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the Lone Star Conference while No. 19 Midwestern State improves to 9-4 and 1-1.
- It was the end of a two-match winning streak for the Falcons dating back to the 2024 NCAA South Central Region Tournament at the MSU Tennis Center, a win that allowed UTPB to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
- Last year, UTPB earned the first regular-season win in program history over MSU.
- MSU would go on to finish last season with a 15-7 overall record during the dual-match season and was 5-3 in conference play. The Mustangs reached the LSC Championship final and qualified for the NCAA Division II South Central Regional for the 12th consecutive year.
