The pairing of
Teodora Vrucan and
Brooke Runyan came back from a 3-2 deficit to win six of the next seven games to win the match and send them to the finals at Incarnate Word. This marks the first players Head Coach
Stan Anderson has coached in the finals while at UT Permian Basin.
Lea Mjertan and Runyan advanced to the semi-finals of their brackets in singles action. Mjertan won by breaking her opponents serve late in both sets. Runyan dropped her first set, but then turned on the jets and came back in the second set winning it 6-1. The match went into a tiebreaker where Runyan came out victorious with a 10-7 advantage.
Krystal Smith beat an opponent from Division I Texas State by a score of 7-5, 6-3. It was Smith's first win over a Division I opponent.
"I am very pleased with the progress the team has been making the past few weeks," said Anderson. "The women have been working hard at practice and they are implementing our patterns during their matches. It is great to see them buying in to what we are doing."
