UT Permian Basin football struggled with holding on to possession Saturday night, committing five turnovers on four interceptions and a fumble as the Falcons were defeated 47-22 by Sul Ross at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.
Falling behind 18-0 in the first half, UTPB was able to close within a pair of points as the Falcons ended the half with a touchdown reception from
Kyle McBride and
Bailey Giffen field goal in the final 3:10 of the first half, and a two-yard touchdown by
Mitchell Leonard with 5:38 remaining in halftime.
But the momentum seemed to shift when Sul Ross recovered a high snap on fourth down for a 38 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown two minutes later.
The Lobos scored on a two-yard run to end the third, but the Falcons got right back in the game on a
Courtney McMaryion 71-yard catch on his lone reception of the night to pull back within nine points to trail 32-11. But Sul Ross closed out the game with the final 16 points of the night to lock up the win.
Michael Myers was the highlight of the night for UTPB. Playing in his first game for the Falcons, he led the team with 40 rushing yards and 164 yards in the air, throwing a pair of touchdowns to Leonard and McMaryion.
James Davis threw for three touchdowns and 316 yards on 16-28 passing in the win for Sul Ross, while Bryon Jones led the Lobos with 135 yards receiving on five catches.
