The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's basketball team missed 11 of its first 12 field goals in the first seven minutes of action, but recovered to eventually take a 94-71 win over St. Edward's in Heartland Conference action.
The Hilltoppers took advantage of the Falcons' poor shooting, jumping out to a 15-6 lead, but UTPB would go on a 12-5 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes to tie the game at 20 with 8:37 to go before the half.
Missy Jackson hit the back end of a pair of free throws to give UTPB a 21-20 advantage – its first of the game.
Sarah Milewski, who finished with 11 points, gave St. Edward's a brief 22-21 advantage with just over seven minutes to play before
Teisha King gave the Falcons the lead for good after making a layup with 5:37 to go before the break. King was one of four players to finish in double-figures with 17, while
Tammy Acosta and
Miesha Blackshear poured in 22 and 20 points respectively.
Cashena Mathis had 12 on 5-of-11 shooting. The Falcons would eventually take a 41-35 lead at halftime.
UTPB opened the second half with a 7-2 run to lead 48-37 and would hold a double-digit lead the final 9:36 of the game. The Falcons would use a 13-6 run to lead 72-55 with 7:12 to go after Acosta made a layup thanks to a Taja Turner steal.
Despite its slow start, UTPB shot 44.7 percent from the field, but struggled from behind the three-point line, hitting 7-of-23 from long range. The Falcons improved to 15-5 overall and 4-1 in Heartland Conference play and will host St. Mary's next Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
