Black History Month - Peyton Jones

Understanding the Impact: Peyton Jones Reflects on Black History Month

2/5/2026 11:30:00 AM

Understanding the past is central to how Peyton Jones, a women's tennis player, approaches Black History Month. A freshman at UTPB majoring in Business Management, Jones believes the month is an opportunity to both celebrate Black contributions and acknowledge the ongoing impact of racial injustice.

"Black history is important to me because It's a way to honor Black history and celebrate all of the contributions that Black Americans have made to society," said Jones. "It is also important to bring awareness to understanding how slavery, segregation, and racial injustice still impacts Black Americans today."

Celebrating Black identity has often meant coming together with family and friends, especially during meaningful community events.

"One memory that I have is going to a Juneteenth festival every summer with my friends and family," said Jones. "There was food, drinks, games, and music, and it was a good way to celebrate black history."
An influential quote that continues to resonate with Jones comes from Maya Angelou: "Nothing can dim the light that shines within."

As a member of the UTPB tennis team, Jones has found a strong sense of support and belonging on campus.

"What I love most about UTPB is being on the tennis team because all of my teammates and coaches are very supportive."
