Baseball run-ruled again at SEU

AUSTIN, Texas (February 22, 2026) – After giving up 16 walks in a 19-5 run-rule in game one of the series on Friday, the UT Permian Basin baseball team bounced back and held the Hilltoppers to just 10 runs and 11 hits in two games on Saturday, but the series finale on Sunday saw the Falcons issue 14 more walks and again fall in seven innings, 13-3, on a windy day at St. Edward's University.

Walks again were bearing their head on Sunday. Santana Hernandez (0-3) walked the first three batters in the bottom of the first, and then walked in a run with one out. That was followed by a two-run double down the left field line, and then a sacrifice fly to right field made it 4-0 as all four runners who walked in the inning scored for SEU.

In all, eight of the first 10 batters reached for SEU against Santana, leading to five runs on three hits. Isaac Rodriguez would come in with the bases loaded in the first inning and got the final out with a swinging strikeout.

UTPB got a run back in the top of the second inning as back-to-back singles by Demetrius Deramus and Cruz Garcia to start off the inning led to a sacrifice fly to center field by Braeden Dyck.

A double play helped keep SEU off the scoreboard in the bottom of the second as a flyout to right field saw Tanner Hedrick throw out the runner trying to score on the tag up.

UTPB had just two hits in the first five innings of the game, but got back-to-back singles to lead off an inning for the second time in the game as the sixth inning started with a pair of hits by Hedrick and Carlos Chavez that led to an RBI-groundout by Garcia to make it a 10-2 deficit.

Hedrick would add an RBI-single in the seventh inning, but the bottom of the seventh for SEU started with a double, a single and an RBI-double. An intentional walk would load the bases, and with two outs, the final run came across on another walk.

Just like the series opener, SEU scored more runs that it had hits.

The Hilltoppers also finished the series finale with five doubles.

Hedrick finished 2-for-4 and was the lone Falcon to record both a run scored and an RBI in the game.

UTPB is now 4-10 both overall and in the Lone Star Conference while SEU improves to 9-4.

Next up, the Falcons will begin their third LSC series at home this season. The Falcons will battle West Texas A&M University starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 27, from Roden Field in Odessa, Texas.
