Cross country back in action at New Mexico Junior College

HOBBS, N.M. (September 26, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's cross country team was back in action at the inaugural Dr. Steve McCleery Invitational, hosted by New Mexico Junior College at Harry McAdams Parks on the morning of Friday, September 26.

In the field of 48 runners, Fanny Bergstrom (7:23.4/mi) was 30th with a 5K time of 22:57.70, Celine Maldonado (7:32.5/mi) was 35th with a time of 23:25.90, Nayeli Galindo (7:40.0/mi) was 38th with a time of 23:49.40 and Gabrielle Garcia (7:40.5/mi) was 39th at 23:51.00. Bergstrom has led the Falcons in both races so far this season.

"Our first four runners stayed close and worked together really well," said Head Coach Melanie Ramirez."

Lastly, Julie Tejeda was 45th at 26:19.20 and Railey Rodriguez was 47th at 27:12.40.

New Mexico Junior College (1:35.32), ranked No. 3 nationally in the USTFCCCA rankings, scored 32 points to win by nine points over Ranger Community College (41 points; 1:38.14). NMJC's Yididiya Bifa took home the individual win with a time of 17:43.20, over 39 seconds fastest than the next-closest runner.

The meet is dedicated to former NMJC President Dr. Steve McCleery who sadly passed away earlier this year. Dr. McCleery graciously served the Thunderbirds as President from 1998-2016, as an interim President from 2021-22, and as President Emeritus from 2023-24. Dr. McCleery was an ardent supporter of the cross country and track & field programs during and after his time with NMJC.

The Falcons are back in action for their regular-season finale at the DBU Old Glory Gallop starting at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, at AP ranch in Fort Worth, Texas. It will be the same location as the upcoming Lone Star Conference Championships on Saturday, October 25.
