LUBBOCK, Texas (April 6, 2025) – Playing against one of the toughest teams in the county, The No. 34 University of Texas Permian Basin men's tennis team lost a 6-1 decision at No. 5 nationally-ranked Lubbock Christian University on Sunday at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
The Chaparrals' lineup featured four nationally-ranked singles players and two nationally-ranked doubles pairs.
UTPB's lone win in doubles came from
Florian Kralik and
Grzegorz Rudnicki with a 6-3 decision over No. 27 nationally-ranked Mattia Ghedin and Marco Seccia at No. 2 doubles. In the final doubles match at No. 1 doubles, the No. 18-ranked duo of
Jonas Krahofer and
Jonathan Vega suffered a 6-4 defeat against No. 40-ranked Kelly Giese and Jordan Georgiev.
In singles, Rudnicki upset Ghedin (No. 54 nationally-ranked) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, but
Lucas Nakasato fell 6-3, 6-3 against No. 15-ranked Pablo Segura at No. 2 singles.
From there, Krahofer fell in a tiebreaker in the second set, 7-2, 7-6 (7-5), against Seccia at No. 5 singles;
Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez Ibanez fell in two tiebreakers, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), against Andres De Los Rios at No. 4 singles; and
Lucas Nitzschke lost in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to No. 68-ranked Blas Ruiz Romero at No. 6 singles.
In the final match at No. 1 singles, it was a showdown between two nationally-ranked opponents as Vega (No. 33) and Giese (No. 12) fought to a third-set tiebreaker. In the end, Vega came up just short in a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) decision.

- UTPB falls to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the Lone Star Conference while LCU improves to an impressive 17-1 and 4-0.
- The Chaps, winners of 16 straight duals, also improve to 7-0 against nationally-ranked foes this season.
Next Up: The UTPB men's tennis team is off next week and does not return to action until Easter Weekend when it is set to host three straight home matches at the Bush Tennis Center. The Falcons have a nonconference match against McMurry University scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, followed by Sul Ross State University at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 18, and Western New Mexico University at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19.
