Championship runs are rarely without adversity, and The University of Texas Permian Basin men's tennis player
Christian Lopez's path to the Men's Flight A title at the Dallas Showdown Tennis Tournament was a testament to that reality. Lopez overcame an early test, delivered a strong quarterfinal performance, and navigated a pair of unusual late-round finishes to capture the championship at Coppell High School on May 30-31.
"Winning the Dallas Showdown has been a blessing for me," said Lopez. "Coach Tolson and Coach David have made a huge impact in my life, as they have helped me get back on court after some injuries, and helped me find my game and identity on court. Can't wait to see what the rest of the summer holds!"
Lopez's toughest challenge came in his first match in the Round of 16. After taking the opening set 6-3 against Roberto Newell, Lopez saw the match level when Newell claimed the second set 6-4. Undeterred, Lopez responded in the deciding super tiebreaker, securing a 10-7 victory to advance with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win.
The momentum continued in the quarterfinals, where Lopez turned in one of his most complete performances of the tournament. He defeated Eashan Gowda in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to move into the semifinals.
Lopez appeared poised for another strong outing in the semifinals, racing out to a 3-0 lead over Chace Underwood before Underwood retired from the match. The championship match ended in similar fashion, as Shrihan Padi withdrew prior to completion, giving Lopez the Men's Flight A crown.
