ALPINE, Texas (April 21, 2025) – In the team's final nonconference game of the season, the UT Permian Basin baseball team continued its offensive onslaught in games against Sul Ross State University, scoring 15-plus runs for the fifth-straight game against the Lobos. The Falcons racked up 15 hits in their 16-5 seven-inning run-rule win at Sul Ross on Monday afternoon. The victory puts the Falcons just two wins away from their third-straight 20-win season.
UTPB posted two run-rule victories and outscored Sul Ross 83-38 in their four-game series in Alpine, Texas, at the beginning of the month. In the series finale, the Falcons set a season-high in runs (26), hits (21), RBI's (21) and walks (10). In game two of the series, 10 of UTPB's 16 hits were extra-base hits, including a season-high nine doubles.
Down 5-4 after two innings after a solo home run to left field with two outs gave Sul Ross the lead and capped a five-run bottom of the second inning, the UTPB offense responded with seven runs on five hits, two walks and two errors in the top of the third inning. An RBI-single to center field by
Brent Rigtrup tied the score and a three-run double down the left field line by
Jarren Lewis broke the tie.
Freshman
Sebastian Lozoya made his second start of the season, lasting 2.2 innings and combining with
Taven Hathaway (1.1 innings),
Cole Tague (1 inning),
Jackson Markwood (1 inning) and three more pitchers in the seventh inning to shut out the Lobos for five straight innings starting in the third. In addition, the Lobos were limited to just one hit over the final four innings.
For the UTPB offense, six Falcons scored at least two runs in the contest, five finished with two hits, and four had at least two walks.
Carson Johnson was 2-for-5 with three runs scored, Rigtrup was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's,
Taylor McDaniel was 2-for-3, and Lewis was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and the previously-mentioned three-run double to give the Falcons a lead they would never relinquish.
The Falcons also drew a season-high 11 walks, led by
Andrew Prado with three walks, including a pair of RBI-walks.
Next up, the Falcons return home for the final series of the season, hosting Lubbock Christian University Friday-Sunday (Apr. 25-27). Game one against the Chaparrals is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, April 25, from Roden Field.
