Falcons open final series vs. LCU

ODESSA, Texas (April 25, 2025) – Opening its final series of the season against Lubbock Christian University and the presumed Lone Star Conference Player of the Year in senior infielder Brevin McCool, The University of Texas Permian Basin could not contain McCool or the LCU offense and lost 21-1 in seven innings on Friday at Roden Field.

McCool finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBI's, two home runs and two walks. He blasted a solo home run to left field to break a 1-1 tie and lead off the third inning, and then he hit a two-run shot to right center field to score the first two runs of a 10-run fifth inning for the Chaparrals.

McCool's first home run tied the Lone Star Conference single-season record (29), set by Cameron's Chase Larsson in 2011, while his second home run broke the record (30). McCool now own the conference's single-game, single-season and career home run records. He is now just one home run shy of tying the LCU single-season record and is three homers away from tying the Lubbock Christian career record.

Last week, McCool was named both the Lone Star Conference and NCBWA South Central Region Hitter of the Week after hitting .667 (8-for-12) with five home runs and 15 RBI's without any strikeouts to lead the Chaps to a conference series sweep of Cameron University. In the series-opening win, McCool's first three at-bats (in just three innings) were: grand slam, three-run home run and two-run homer.

With a combined three home runs on Friday at UTPB, LCU increase it LSC-leading total to 81 home runs.

Lost in the sight of 21 runs scored and 16 walks drawn by the LCU offense was a one-hitter tossed by the Chaps' pitching staff. It was a combined effort by Karson Dunn (5.1 innings), who earned his first win of the season, and Nick Blevins (1.2 innings).

After a two-out walk and back-to-back two-out singles led to the first run of the game for LCU in the top of the first, UTPB quickly tied it in the bottom half as Kaleb Scull led off with a triple to right center field and then scored on an RBI-groundout to second base by Jack Haggerty.

As mentioned, that would be the only hit of the game for the Falcons, who got a one-out walk from Andrew Prado in the bottom of the third and drew a pair of walks in both the fourth and sixth innings against Dunn.

LCU broke the game open in the fifth with a 10-run inning, scoring eight of the runs with two outs.

UTPB falls to 18-29 overall and 17-28 in the Lone Star Conference while LCU improves to 30-17 and 29-16. Heading into the final week of the regular season, LCU is in sole possession of fourth place in the Lone Star Conference standings with a magic number of two to clinch at least that spot. If they win all four games against UTPB this weekend, they could finish in the No. 3 spot in the league.

LCU and UTPB met a whopping eight times during the 2024 season. The Falcons won the regular season series at Hays Field, but the Chaps won four meetings in the postseason, including in the LSC Championship and the South Central Regional final.

Lubbock Christian comes into the weekend at UTPB off a four-game sweep over Cameron University in which it outscored the Aggies 68-25 and clubbed 13 home runs in the series. LCU hit a whopping .463 against Cameron last weekend. In the series-opener, the Chaps racked up 34 runs, which broke a program record that had stood since 1994.

Lubbock Christian also enters the weekend ranked No. 6 nationally in slugging percentage (.599), No. 6 in scoring (10.4), No. 5 in home runs (78), No. 4 in hits (542) and No. 7 in batting average (.351). They are also second nationally in walks drawn with 271 for a team on-base percentage of .457. Seven of the nine Chaparral starters are batting at least .330 on the season, including McCool and Jacob Gutierrez, who both homered against the Falcons on Friday, both batting above .400.

UTPB's final doubleheader of the season will be at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, April 26, from Roden Field.
