No. 50 men’s tennis too strong for McMurry

MIDLAND, Texas (April 17, 2025) – After a week off last week, the final nonconference match of the 2025 season for The No. 50 nationally-ranked University of Texas Permian Basin men's tennis team saw the Falcons defeat NCAA Division III McMurry University by a final score of 6-1 on Thursday at the Bush Tennis Center.

Sebastian Garcia made his season debut and teamed with Lucas Nakasato to win 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. In singles, Nakasato and Lucas Nitzschke also pitched a shutout, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

In the remaining matches, the No. 23 nationally-ranked doubles pair of Jonathan Vega and Jonas Krahofer won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez Ibanez and Nitzschke won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles while in singles, Vega (No. 38 nationally-ranked in singles) won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Gonzalez Ibanez won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Florian Kralik was victorious 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Vega and Krahofer improved to 9-1 in doubles (8-1 at No. 1 doubles) while Gonzalez Ibanez and Nitzschke moved to 8-2 together. In singles, Vega improved to 8-4 (all at No. 1 singles), Gonzalez Ibanez improved to 9-4 (4-0 at No. 3 singles), and Nitzschke improved to 6-5 (5-1 at No. 5 singles).

  • The Falcons improve to 8-5 overall on the year and finish 6-3 in nonconference matches.
  • UTPB has defeated McMurry in six straight matches, including a sweep in each of the last three years.
 
Next Up: Easter Weekend at the Bush Tennis Center will continue as the Falcons return to Lone Star Conference action against Sul Ross State University at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 18, followed by Senior Day against Western New Mexico University at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19.
