Men’s tennis beats No. 38 Cameron in LSC opener

Krahofer clinches the hard-fought 4-3 win

ODESSA, Texas (March 28, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin men's tennis team played its first home match and first Lone Star Conference match of the 2025 season on Friday morning and came away with a 4-3 victory over No. 38 Cameron University at the Ratliff Stadium Complex Tennis Courts in Odessa, Texas. It is the second win for UTPB against Cameron in program history.

UTPB swept doubles as Jonas Krahofer and Jonathan Vega won 6-1 in the top spot over the No. 26 nationally-ranked duo of Kristian Kubik and Lachlan Setina. Grzegorz Rudnicki and Florian Kralik then won 6-2 in the two hole while Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez Ibanez and Lucas Nitzschke pulled out a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreak win at No. 3 doubles.

Rudnicki started singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Pavel Kelo at the No. 3 spot, giving UTPB a 2-0 lead.

UTPB then fell at both the No. 2 and No. 4 positions to tie the match before Vega gave the Falcons back the lead (3-2) with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory at No. 1 singles over Louis Boilevin, the No. 23 nationally-ranked singles player in NCAA Division II.

In the next match at No. 5 singles, Vega's partner in doubles, Krahofer, rolled to a big 6-1, 6-4 victory over Rhys Edwards to clinch the match.

  • UTPB improves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the LSC. Last year, the Falcons defeated defending LSC champion Cameron 5-2, earning their first-win ever against the Aggies.
  • Cameron falls to 4-7 and 0-2. Last week, the Aggies dropped their LSC opener 4-3 at No. 11 Midwestern State on Tuesday (Mar. 18) after upsetting the No. 5-ranked team in the nation, Washburn, on Monday (Mar. 17) at home.
 
Next Up: UTPB remains at the Ratliff Stadium Complex Tennis Courts tomorrow, Saturday, March 29, against Midwestern State University. The men's match will see the Falcons play against the No. 15 nationally-ranked Mustangs (starting at 2 p.m.). Each of UTPB's first four conference matches this season, including today's match against Cameron, are against a team currently-ranked in the top-50 of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
