Men's Golf Hrnciar

Falcons run away to win Hrnciar; Bourehim wins individual medalist honors

10/7/2025 6:25:00 PM

DUNCAN, Okla. (October 7, 2025) – No one could stop The University of Texas Permian Basin men's golf team this week as the Falcons rolled to a 17-stroke win over the rest of the field at The Hrnciar. Individually, Nizar Bourehim picked up medalist honors by one stroke over teammate Ioan Rowe.

The Hrnciar took place at the par-72, 6920-yard Territory Golf & Country Club in Duncan, Oklahoma.

It was a great start to the second tournament of the Fall season for the Falcons, who shot eight-under-par during each of the first two rounds and led the tournament by four strokes after round one and by seven strokes after round two. The Falcons' two-round team score of 560 was good for the lowest two-round team score in the history of UTPB men's golf. In addition, their score of 280 during each of the first two rounds was good for the fifth-lowest single-round team scores in program history.

UTPB Head Golf Coach Paul Chavez spoke regarding his team's performance during the first day of the tournament, saying "Today was special. We had record breaking performances and career-low rounds, but more importantly, my team played their butts off. To shoot the low scores they did on the very demanding Territory GC track is truly remarkable and deserves recognition. No matter the outcome tomorrow, my team will bring their best effort, but today was one of the best team golf performances I have ever coached. This team picked each other up, grinded every shot, stayed positive, and played for their teammates. That is the epitome of team golf, and I am so proud to be the leader of this team."

In the end, UTPB (280-280-289; 849; -15) was the only team to finish under-par for the tournament, finishing ahead of Dallas Baptist University (284-283-299; 866; +2) in second place and host Cameron University (286-283-300; 869: +5) in third.

UTPB's final team score of 849 is the third-lowest three-round score in program history.

After getting his second win at UTPB in as many years, Coach Chavez said, "I've never been to this course before, and when I first saw it, I thought even-par would be a good score, so for us to shoot the scores we did is a remarkable accomplishment. Another aspect I believe that led to our performance was that we let once slip away last week in Mexico. The players knew we had a great opportunity to win that one, so for this tournament I challenged everyone to play as a team, to be more involved and play with a purpose. They took that to heart, played hard and stayed engaged throughout the entire tournament, and we had some great performances. In the end, I think we showed that we have the talent and the depth to put together a championship caliber team."

This is the fourth tournament title for the Falcons in the last three seasons after winning their first two tournaments in program history in Hawaii in Fall 2023. It was also career win No. 160 for Coach Chavez, who also saw his Falcons win their second tournament of the Fall season a year ago at the RJGA South Central Shootout.

By the end of day one, a pair of Falcons (Bourehim and Rowe) found themselves in a three-player tie for first place at eight-under. Bourehim (69-67-70; 206; -10) shot three-under during round one and five-under during round two to move up two spots into the lead. After shooting even-par during the opening round, Rowe (72-64-71; 207; -9) went eight-under during round two, the best round of any player in the tournament, and rose 17 spots to pull into a tie with Bourehim and Rory Gorman (Cameron).

"Ioan obviously had a career round yesterday, and that really got us excited as a team and pushed us to come out today despite it being cold, windy and miserable," said Coach Chavez. "His performance kept us all motivated to play well, and that is a great example of team golf."

With his second-round score of 64, Rowe tied for the third-lowest single round score in program history. It was also a tournament record and was his personal career-low round. Meanwhile, his and Bourehim's two-round score of 136 each slotted in as the third-lowest two-round scores in the UTPB record books.

During the final round, Bourehim shot two under, making him the only player in the field of 76 golfers to shoot under-par during all three rounds of the tournament, and good enough to give him a one-stroke win over Rowe.

Bourehim is the fourth-ever UTPB golfer to win a tournament, joining teammate Will Tate (2023-26), Sangha Park (2022-24) and Colton Hilburn (2020-22).

With a three-round score of 206, Bourehm's score was tied for the third-lowest in the UTPB record books while Rowe's score (207) is tied for the sixth-lowest.

Coach Chavez spoke on Bourehim's performance, adding "When I recruited Nizzy last year, I knew he would be able to come in and make an impact, and after last week's performance, he was playing with a purpose this week. Anytime you play with a chip on your shoulder, usually your best comes out."

Will Tate (68-74-73; 215; -1) opened the tournament with a four-under-par and was in second place, just two strokes off the leader, Samu Kyntölä (NMJC), at six-under. However, during round two, Tate shot two-over and was tied for 15th place still at two-under-par for the tournament. Tate finished with a one-over score during the third and final round, keeping him under-par for the tournament and allowing him to move up six spots into a three-player tie for ninth place.

Each of UTPB's top-four players contributing to the team score finished at two-over or better after day one of the tournament as Thonsaeng Nunya (71-75-75; 221; +5) opened the tournament at one-under. He then shot three-over during each of the last two rounds and moved up 13 spots form round two to round three to tie for 21st place.

Bourehim led the tournament in par-4 scoring (3.80; -6) and number of birdies (18), Rowe led in par-3 scoring (2.92; -1) and par-4 scoring (4.42; -7), and Nunya was first in total pars (40).

The final member of UTPB's top-five, Quinn Robertson (80-79-82; 241; +25), finished tied for 71st place

Playing as an individual and making his Falcon debut, freshman Laurent Beech (74-68-81; 223; +7) was up to the task early, shooting the exact opposite scores of Tate during each of the first two rounds and using a four-under during round two to move up 18 spots into a tie with Tate and three other players for 15th place. He ultimately tied for 29th place.

Coach Chavez concluded, "The thing that I stressed all week was let's go into this week playing to win, not playing not to lose. That was my message to the team, and I think especially in golf, you want to play aggressive and fearlessly. The motto this week was play to win, and we did just that. Obviously your goal is to win every tournament we participate in, but to get a win this early is a plus for our program and is a great start to what I feel is going to be a great season. We are looking forward to getting ready for next week."

The team is back in action next week (Oct. 14-15) for the Ryan Palmer Invitational hosted by West Texas A&M University at the Amarillo Country Club.
