Men’s golf finishes Fall season sixth at DBU Classic

10/28/2025 8:55:00 PM

ROCKWALL, Texas (October 28, 2025) – Playing at the same course as the host site of the 2026 Lone Star Conference Championships, The University of Texas Permian Basin men's golf team finished in sixth place out of 14 teams at the DBU Classic held at the Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club.

UTPB (299-289-298; 886; +22) tied for the third-best score among all teams during round two (-1) and has now shot under 300 during all three rounds of each of its last three tournaments.

UTPB Head Golf Coach Paul Chavez spoke on his team's performance in their final action of the Fall season and said, "We got off to a slow start in the first round and put ourselves in the bit of a hole, but we played very well in the second round and made a bit of the comeback. However, the final round today was all about survival. Facing a 40-degree wind child and up to 50 mile per hour winds, we played with respect for the conditions, but in the end, were able to put together another top-six finish. Anytime you can finish in the top-third of a tough tournament like this, it is definitely something you can hang your hat on. Sixth was our worst finish of the Fall season, so I will definitely take that this time of year."

Will Tate (77-71-73; 221; +5) led the Falcons in a tie for 23rd place out of 85 golfers, Nizar Bourehim (74-74-74; 222; +6) was one stroke behind in a tie for 26th, and Thonsaeng Nunya (75-75-73; 223; +7) was another stroke behind in a tie for 29th. Bourehim led the Falcons at two-over during round one while Tate rebounded from shooting the Falcons' worst score during round one to shooting one-under during round two, which was tied for the seventh-lowest scoring during the round.

Matching Tate during round two was Ioan Rowe (75-71-79; 225; +9), who tied for 37th place while Laurent Beech (75-73-78; 226; +10) was just one stroke behind him in a tie for 41st.

"Although we did not have an individual standout this week, all five players contributed and played good, solid golf," added Coach Chavez. "However, this week we needed to be great to win, and it didn't happen."

As a team, UTPB led the entire tournament with 180 pars while Beech was tied for second individually with 41 pars and Nunya was tied for fifth with 38 pars.

"That is consistent golf," said Coach Chavez. "Anytime you can lead a tournament in pars, you are playing good, consistent golf. We are not making a whole lot of bogeys and doubles right now, which normally would put you in contention for a title. It is great to see all five starters playing consistent, solid golf as we end the Fall season."

Coach Chavez concluded by reflecting on the Fall season and looking forward to the Spring.

"The great thing about the Fall season is that nobody expected much of our team, but we came out of the gate and showed that we have something special going on," concluded Chavez. "Things are very promising, but we still have plenty of work to do to stay at a high level. I am extremely proud of this team. We had a great Fall and broke many records, but there are many more records to be broken. We definitely have some positive momentum heading in the Spring season, and I am looking forward to continuing our great year."

This was the last time the UTPB men's golf team will be in action during the Fall stretch of its 2025-26 season.
