MIDLAND, Texas - Down 3-0, No. 34 University of Texas Permian Basin staged a comeback for the ages to upset No. 13 UT Tyler, 4-3, on Sunday.
Â
"This is by far the most insane match I've ever been a part of," said head coach
Alex Hunt. "Despite going down 3-0 rather quickly, our men just never stopped believing. Everyone kept going after their shots as confident as ever and it paid off. The clutch tennis played today was great to see. This was a great next step for us as we continue to move forward as a program."
Â
Takumi Katsuda and
Lucas Nitzschke earned a 6-4 win at doubles court three, but the Patriots won on one and two to take the point. The visitors then took the matches on courts four and five to open singles, before the Falcons started their comeback.Â
Â
Nitzschke, a freshman, got UTPB on the board with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-3 win on court six. On court one, No. 26
Vitaliy Horovoy took down No. 18 Joaquin Bianchi, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Katsuda then earned his second win of the day with an upset over No. 45 Egor Shestakov, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), to even things at three.
Jonathan Vega dropped the first set 4-6 but battled back to take the second 6-3. Trailing 5-1 in the third, Vega stormed back to win the next six points to clinch the win for the Falcons.
Â
The Falcons head to Lawton, Oklahoma to face Cameron on Friday, March 29.
