MIDLAND, Texas - Brooke Runyan and Mattea Bowe pulled off a major upset on Thursday for the University of Texas Permian Basin women's tennis team. The duo knocked off the No. 13 doubles pairing in the country and the defending ITA Fall Regional champion. It wasn't enough though as DBU saw strong play in singles for the 6-1 win over the Falcons.
 
"It was great to see Brooke get a big win at the one singles spot," said head coach Alex Hunt. "Brooke and Mattea also stayed in form, dominating the ITA Fall Regional doubles champion at the number one doubles position. On other courts, we certainly had chances to win today, but DBU raised their level during those chances and shut us down on several courts. It was a bit disappointing to see that happen, but our women now know that they can compete and win against top LSC competition. Now it's just going to come down to having the emotional maturity and ability to execute in the heat of the moment. We still have work to do."
 
Runyan and Bowe's win got the Falcons off on the right foot, but the Patriots stormed back on courts two and three to take the doubles point.
 
It was Runyan who had a strong performance in singles, winning her match on court one, 6-3, 6-1. Three of the remaining five matches went to a fifth set, but it was DBU on top in all of them. Lisa Guitton won the second set on three to force a third set but fell in her match, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Bowe also shook off a first set loss to force a third set before falling, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. Teodora Vrucan fell in a closely contested match, including an epic third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 13-11.
 
The Falcons welcome UT Tyler to the Bush Tennis Center on Sunday for a Lone Star Conference contest beginning at 10 a.m.
