UTPB Makes A Clean Sweep In Sherman

SHERMAN, Texas – It was a clean sweep as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's swimming & diving team won all 14 events at the Austin College Invitational, Saturday at Hannah Natatorium.

UTPB scored 884 points to win by 545 points over McMurry.  Rounding out the top five were Austin College (3rd – 243 points), Centenary (La.) (4th – 212 points) and St. Thomas (Texas) (5th – 164 points).

The Falcons won all 14 events enrouteto 34 top three finishes.  UTPB went 1-2-3 in seven events.

Junior Ivan Torres hit the trifecta – winning the 200 freestyle (1:48.74), 500 free (4:57.82) and the 200 IM (2:00.99).  He also swam on the winning 400 free relay squad.

Junior Evan Siegrist won the 200 butterfly (2:00.36) and the 1650 free (16:38.07).

Additional individual victories came from senior Daniel Bednarski in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.37), freshman Tommy Betancour in the 100 fly (53.64), freshman Colin Doyle in the 100 backstroke (54.38), freshman Zane Garner in the 200 back (2:05.37), senior Trevor Heath in the 50 free (22.32), junior Nathan Powell in the 100 breast (1:01.75) and sophomore Issac Velasquez in the 100 free (49.52).

Relay wins came from the 400 free team of Powell, sophomore Owen Putnam, Betancour and Torres (3:21.13) and the 400 medley squad of Garner, Powell, junior Szymon Gilzynski and Heath ( (3:37.53).

UT Permian Basin will compete at the Colorado College Classic, Jan. 19-21.  The meet is schedule to start at 4:00 p.m., MT on Friday, the 19th and will run all day on the 20th and 21st.
