LUBBOCK, Texas – It was a strong team performance as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's tennis team finished out Day 1 of the ITA South Central Regional.

Sophomores Vitaliy Horovoy and Takumi Katsuda each went 2-0 to advance to the round of 16 at Flight A Singles.  Horovoy beat Martin Hlavacek of Cameron (6-3, 6-3) and Mattia Ghedin of Lubbock Christian (6-3, 6-1).

Katsuda was just as strong with wins over Juan Duque of Midwestern State (6-2, 6-3) and Rhys Edwards of Cameron (6-1, 6-1).

In the round of 64 at Flight A, freshman Lucas Nitzschke beat Charles Heffernan of Midwestern State (6-2, 6-3).  Heffernan was an All-Lone Star Conference second team selection in 2022-23

UTPB flexed their muscle in doubles with five wins in seven matches.  At Flight A Doubles, Horovoy and Nitzschke beat Artur Beitman and Will Fiala of Dallas Baptist (8-3) and Daniel Matheu Baldor and Leonardo Fabbri of St. Mary's (8-5) to advance to the quarterfinals.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Katsuda and sophomore Jonas Krahofer with wins over Aaron Ben Anton and Oskar Irdoja of St. Mary's (8-2) and Martins Abamu and Sabri Laphitz of Lubbock Christian (8-5).
