Falcons Storm Back To Corral Buffaloes

ODESSA, Texas – A raucous crowd of over 7,000 saw a spirited comeback as The University of Texas Permian Basin football team (3-1, 1-0 Lone Star Conference) beat West Texas A&M (2-2, 1-1 LSC), Saturday night at Astound Broadband Stadium.

West Texas A&M scored early returning a blocked punt for a touchdown, just 1:19 into the game.  The defense on both sides kept a tight lid on the end zone in the first half with just 17 total points.

In the second half, UTPB and the Buffaloes opened up combining to score 64 points.  In the third, WTAM went up 17-3.  Senior Ben Patterson scored on a 24-yard pass from grad student Kenny Hrncir to make it 17-10.

The pressure was on as West Texas A&M led 27-17 with 6:37 to go in the fourth quarter.  At the 4:28 mark, Hrncir found junior Deon Cook in the end zone to make it 27-24.  The Buffaloes scored about a minute later to go back up by 10.

Junior Rafael Vargas nailed a 35-yard field goal to make it 34-27 with 1:52 to go.  On the ensuing kickoff, Vargas recovered the onside kick at the UTPB 48-yard line.  The Falcons made a methodical drive down the field.  Hrncir plunged in from the one with 15 seconds left to tie the game.

In overtime, UT Permian Basin had the ball first.  Once again Hrncir scored from the one to make it 41-34.  West Texas A&M scored and saw UTPB blocked the 2-point conversion pass for the win.  UTPB scored 31 points in the fourth quarter and 17 in the final 4 and ½ minutes.

Hrncir had a hand in all five touchdowns for the Falcons.  He ran for 105 yards and two scores and threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns.  He finished with 424 yards in total offense, the second-best mark in school history.

Cooley had his first 100-yard receiving game as he caught five passes for 120 yards.  Sophomore Calvin Littles returned three kickoffs for 75 yards.

Defensively, grad student Hayden Kelly had eight tackles while grad student Dequan Street recorded seven tackles.

UT Permian Basin remains home, Saturday, Sept. 30, taking on Texas A&M Kingsville.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
