UTPB Wraps Up Javelinas For Historic Win

ODESSA, Texas – It was a milestone win as The University of Texas Permian Basin football team (4-1, 2-0 Lone Star Conference) knocked off #16 Texas A&M Kingsville (3-1, 1-1 LSC) 29-17, Saturday night at Ratliff Stadium.  This is the first time in program history that the Falcons have beaten a Top 25 team.

In the first half, UTPB and Texas A&M Kingsville played a strategic game of football.  Defensive stops on both sides led to the Falcons leading 13-10 at halftime with nine of those total 23 points on field goals.

In the second half, sophomore Kory Harris had an eight-yard touchdown run with 6:47 to go in the third quarter to put UT Permian Basin up 20-10.  A key turning point came with 3:28 left in the third.  A miscue on a punt gave the Javelinas the ball on UTPB's five-yard line.  Sophomore Victor Idusuyi came up with two tackles for a loss including a sack to push TAMK back 10 yards.

After that, Texas A&M Kingsville lost traction.  Grad student Kenny Hrncir ran 18 yards to make it 27-10 at the 11:17 mark of the fourth quarter.  The Javelinas would score; however, UTPB got the ball with 7:51 left and took 5:46 off the clock before punting with 2:05 to go.

That punt by grad student Sergio Landeros landed on the TAMK one-yard line.  On the next play, senior Elden Titania tackled the runner in the end zone for a safety.  The Falcons got the ball back and ran out the clock.

The rushing attack netted 222 yards and three touchdowns.  Harris ran for 104 yards, the second straight week a Falcon has accomplished that.  Rushing touchdowns also came from junior Nemier Herod and Hrncir.  Junior Rafael Vargas has now hit 35 extra points, tying the school record set by Hayden Decossas in 2019.

Defensively, UTPB held the Javelinas to just 97 yards on the ground and 241 yards in total offense.  Junior Champ Mathis had 10 tackles with one for a loss and forced a fumble.  Idusuyi finished with three tackles for a loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry.  The Falcons had six QB hurries in total with four by senior Dominic Varela.

UT Permian Basin hits the road, Saturday, Oct. 7 taking on Midwestern State.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
