UTPB Closes Out Strong

CARMEL, Ind. – Junior Ainhoa Gurruchaga and sophomore Arnie Taguines finished among the top 10 as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's golf team competed at the UIndy Invitational, Monday.  The tournament was played at Prairie View Golf Club, a Par-72.

This is the premier women's golf tournament at the NCAA Division II level.  12 of the 16 teams qualified for regionals last year with eight making it to nationals.  Seven of the top 25 ranked teams were here including #1 Dallas Baptist (National Champs) and #2 Lynn (3rd at nationals).

#5 Findlay (303-290-293= 886 - +22) came from behind to win by seven strokes over Lynn (301-288-304= 893 - +29).  Rounding out the top five were #25 Central Missouri (294-297-304= 895 - +31), St. Mary's (Texas) (4th – 299-296-304= 899 - +35) and Dallas Baptist (5th – 306-293-303= 902 - +38). 

The Falcons shot 303-304-307= 914 to finish 8th at +50.  UTPB finished ahead of three teams that made national last year: Missouri St. Louis, Tiffin and Wayne State (Mich.).

Individually, Mary Kelly Mulcahy (Findlay) (74-68-70= 212) won by five strokes over Olivia Stoll (Grand Valley State) (69-72-76).

Gurruchaga tied for ninth at +7 (76-77-70= 223).  She shot two under par for the third round, tying for the best score of the day.  Gurruchaga led the squad with seven birdies

Taguines tied for ninth at +7 (73-79-71= 223).  She led the tournament with 42 pars.

Junior Gabriela Maldonado tied for 24th at +12 (75-73-80).  She recorded six birdies.

Freshman Katrin Davidsdottir finished 63rd at +28 (83-75-86= 244).

Freshman Amanda Davidsson finished 74th at +32 (79-81-88= 248).

UT Permian Basin heads to Goodyear, Ariz., Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 18-19 to compete at the Shootout at Estrella.  The tournament will be at GC of Estrella.
