Falcons Corral Mustangs On The Road

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Junior Rafael Vargas broke a school record as The University of Texas Permian Basin football team (5-1, 3-0 Lone Star Conference) beat Midwestern State (2-3, 1-2 LSC), Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.  This is the first win at MSU in program history.  The Falcons have also tied the school record for victories.

In the first quarter, UTPB started their first drive on their 20-yard line.  The Falcons methodically drove down the field.  Sophomore Kory Harris ran in from the Midwestern State 2-yardline to put UT Permian Basin up 7-0 at the 7:08 mark.

On their next possession, the Mustangs had a first and goal from the seven.  UTPB's defense held and MSU had to settle for a 25-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 2:01 left in the opening period.

UT Permian Basin wasted little time in countering.  Junior Nemier Herod took off for a 49-yard touchdown run just 62 seconds later.  Key defensive plays from both squads kept the score at 14-3, Falcons heading into halftime.

At the 6:58 mark of the third quarter, Midwestern State scored to close the gap to 14-10.  The Mustangs hit a 40-yard field goal with 14:11 left in the game to make it a one-point game, 14-13.

On their next possession, UT Permian Basin took nearly five minutes off the clock.  Herod scored from the four-yard line to push the lead to 21-13.  With 1:54 to go, Midwestern State had 3rd and one on the UTPB 30.

Junior Malik Allen stopped the runner at the line and again on 4th and 1 to give the ball back to UTPB.  On 4th and 1 from their own 39-yard line, grad student Kenny Hrncir ran for three yards to get the first down and seal the game.

The Falcons finished with 381 yards in total offense.  Herod ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns.  Hrncir was 14-of-27 for 232 yards.  Sophomore Ben Patterson had four catches for 100 yards, his first 100-yard game.  Vargas has hit 38 extra points, breaking the school record of 35 set by Hayden Decossas in 2019.

Defensively, UTPB held the Mustangs to just 85 yards in the air, the third lowest total in school history.  Grad student Hayden Kelly had 14 tackles with two for a loss while junior Jalon Rocquemore had eight tackles.

UT Permian Basin returns home, Saturday, Oct. 14 taking on Eastern New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
