UTPB Slows Down Greyhounds

MIDLAND, Texas – Records were falling all over the place as The University of Texas Permian Basin football team (Receiving Votes) (6-1, 4-0 Lone Star Conference) beat Eastern New Mexico (3-4, 2-4 LSC) 52-29, Saturday night at Astound Broadband Stadium.  The Falcons set eight school records.

In the first quarter, Eastern New Mexico took over seven minutes off the clock before scoring with 7:05 left.  Just two minutes later, grad student Kenny Hrncir connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass to freshman Traylen Suel.

The second quarter was one of trading touchdowns.  Junior Nemier Herod ran 37 yards for a score and the two-point conversion made it 14-7, UTPB at the 12:15 mark.  The Greyhounds scored just 26 seconds later to tie it up at 14.  With 10:20 to go, sophomore Kory Harris went 55 yards to make it 21-14.

In the third quarter, Herod rambled 71 yards for a touchdown and junior Rafael Vargas kicked a 25-yard field goal.  That put UTPB up 31-14.  The Falcons sealed the game with two touchdowns in the first 90 seconds of the final quarter.

UT Permian Basin ran for 458 yards and had 677 yards in total offense, both school records.  It broke the marks of 413 and 617 respectively, vs. Texas A&M Kingsville (Nov. 16, 2019).  The Falcons have now broken the single season records for rushing touchdowns (25), total touchdowns (47), extra points (43) and points (352).

For the first time in school history, three players ran for 100 yards.  Harris ran for 159 (3rd best in UTPA history) and a TD, Herod had 152 (4th best in UTPA history) and three touchdowns and Hrncir ran for 102 yards.  Herod now has 11 touchdowns and 66 points, breaking the records of 10 TD and 60 points set by M.J. Link (2022).

Hrncir was extremely efficient in the air, going 13-of-21 for 194 yards and two touchdowns.  The Falcons finished with 219 yards against the best passing defense in the conference at 133 yards allowed per game (5th in NCAA DII).

Defensively, UTPB held the Greyhounds to 126 yards, well below their league leading 248.8 yards per game (8th nationally).   Grad student Hayden Kelly had 14 tackles with two for a loss and a sack while junior Ashton Hamby had eight tackles.  Kelly now has 200 career tackles, just the third player in school history to reach that milestone.

UT Permian Basin takes to the road, Saturday, Oct. 21 taking on #20 Angelo State.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
