UTPB Drives Away The Wolves

ODESSA, Texas – It was a memorable homecoming as The University of Texas Permian Basin football team (#22 / #19) (8-1, 6-0 Lone Star Conference) beat Western Oregon (3-6, 2-4 LSC) 28-16, Saturday night at Astound Broadband Stadium.

In the first quarter, UTPB and Western Oregon played hard nosed defense as there were just 94 yards in total offense between the two teams.  The Wolves hit a 39-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead after one quarter.

Grad student Kenny Hrncir put the Falcons in the lead with a five-yard touchdown run at the 10:43 mark of the second quarter.  In the last three minutes of the first half, Hrncir fired two touchdown strikes to sophomore Ben Patterson

That put UT Permian Basin up 21-3 at the half.  WOU scored two late touchdowns but UTPB recovered an onside kick with 1:39 left in the game and ran out the clock.

Hrncir was 23-of-37 for 379 yards and three touchdowns and added 46 yards and a score on the ground for 425 yards in total offense.  That is second best in school history and he broke the season records for total offensive plays (384) and total offensive yards (2822).

Patterson had six catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns and junior Deon Cook had three catches for 133 yards.  This is only the second time in program history two players have had over 100 yards receiving in the same game.

Defensively, grad student Hayden Kelly had 16 tackles, his fourth straight double-digit tackle game.

UT Permian Basin hits the road, Saturday, Nov. 4 taking on Western New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. MST
