Falcons Knock Down Rams

SAN ANGELO, Texas – It was another win over a ranked opponent as The University of Texas Permian Basin football team (RV / #25) (7-1, 5-0 Lone Star Conference) beat #19 / #18 Angelo State (4-3, 3-2 LSC) 28-23, Saturday night at LeGrand Stadium.

This was the second win over a ranked opponent in school history, both coming this season.  It is the first win over ASU in program history.

Angelo State got off to a 10-0 lead with 12:31 to go in the second quarter.  UTPB passed its way down the field.  At the 8:52 mark, grad student Kenny Hrncir hit senior Jeremiah Cooley with a 16-yard pass for a touchdown.

Four minutes later, the Rams scored to push the lead to 17-7.  On their next possession, the Falcons scored with 41 seconds left as junior Deon Cook scored on a 32-yard pass from Hrncir.  That closed it to 17-14.  ASU managed to hit a field goal on the last play of the half for a 20-14 lead.

In the third quarter, with 10:20 to go from the Angelo State 7-yard line, Hrncir hit junior Laquan Wells in the endzone.  That put UT Permian Basin up 21-20.

The Rams took over five minutes off the clock hitting a field goal to go back up 23-21 at the 4:56 mark.  Sophomore Kory Harris took off for 55 yards, finally being brough down at the ASU 15-yard line.  Two plays later, Hrncir and Wells hooked up for another touchdown, this one for 14 yards for a 28-23 lead.

In the fourth quarter, UTPB shut down Angelo State.  The Falcons held the Rams to just 60 yards in total offense, had a sack and ended two possessions with interceptions.

Hrncir was 21-of-27 for 203 yards and four touchdowns and added 43 yards on the ground for 246 yards in total offense.  Hrncir has now thrown 20 touchdown passes, breaking the school record of 17 by Clayton Roberts (2021).

Junior Rafael Vargas kicked four extra points to bring his season point total to 68.  That broke the record of 66 set by junior Nemier Herod last week.

Defensively, UTPB held the Rams to 122 yards in the air, well below their average of 240.8 yards.   Grad student Hayden Kelly had 13 tackles while junior Champ Mathis had eight tackles.  This is the third straight double-digit tackle game for Kelly.  Senior Dominique Varela had 1.5 sacks pushing his career total to 15.5, tied for second best in school history.
