The World’s Stage: One UTPB Tennis Player’s Connection with the Biggest Sporting Event in the World

12/1/2022 12:06:00 PM

Millions of people around the world tune in for the FIFA World Cup to cheer on their home country in one of the greatest sporting events in the world.  Right now, in Qatar, 32 countries are gathered from across the globe looking to become world champions.

For most, the pride is felt for love of country, but for one member of the UT Permian Basin tennis team, there is a feeling beyond measure as she cheers on not just a team, but a player she has known her entire life.  Olga Guillamon, has the rare opportunity to cheer for her brother, Hugo Guillamon, as he represents their family on the Spanish National Team.  Hugo is one of eight defenders on the seventh ranked team in the world fulfilling a dream for him and his family.

"Growing up we got to watch Spain win the World Cup in 2010 together," said Guillamon.  "I got to see all his hard work, all the work that you don't get to see, when we were younger and to see it pay off for him now at the World Cup is unbelievable."

Hugo plays professionally for their hometown team of Valencia, getting to live out the dream of playing for the team the Guillamons grew up rooting for in addition to playing for the national team.  Now he plays in La Liga, the top level of soccer in Spain and compete against household names in the soccer world like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

This season the 22-year-old has a goal and four assists and started 11 of the team's 19 contests.  Even though he Hugo hasn't appeared in the group stage, Olga still holds extreme pride for her brother and where he's at.

"Sometimes the TV would get a shot of the bench and he's there and you're just like 'That's my brother!'" said Guillamon.  "It's just an unbelievable feeling."

Spain looks to clinch their group today against Japan and advance to the Round of 16.
