It took an extra five minutes of action Thursday night, but thanks to the heroics of
DaJuan Jones, UT Permian Basin Men's Basketball came out on top in overtime over Cameron. Jones finished the night with 20 points and 11 assists, his sixth double-double of the season. Three other Falcons finished the night in double figures.
Kendal Frey tied a season high with 17 while
Lemmie Howard chipped in 13 and
Quinntez Grimes continued his strong play with 12 points.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead by controlling the paint. In the first half, the team scored 26 of their 37 points in the paint and only hit one two-pointer from outside the paint. Neither side was able to get much momentum, but the Falcons maintained a slim lead heading into the half.
The Aggies struck early in the second half, turning a five-point Falcon lead into a six-point lead in favor of the home team. The Falcons swung momentum back in their favor and led by four with four minutes to play. After back-to-back buckets by the Aggies, the teams traded the lead three times before a free throw had the Aggies up two. Grimes knocked down a hook shot with 52 seconds to go to tie things at 72. Both defenses came up with a stop in the final minute sending the game into overtime.
Overtime was all Falcons as they scored the first five points of the period and never looked back.
Miles Daniels opened the action with a jumper before Jones hit a three. The Aggies responded and cut the Falcon lead to just one, but Frey buried a three to end the hopes for the home team. Jones was a perfect 4-for-4 down the stretch from the free throw line to ice the game for the 85-77 final.
Jordan Horn led the team with a career high 10 rebounds. Jones added five boards to his impressive stat line while Frey pulled down six. Grimes had five boards to go along with his 12 points. Off the bench Daniels had seven points and five rebounds.
Next up for the Falcons is a trip to Canyon to face No. 8 West Texas A&M on Saturday. Download the UTPB Athletics App for the latest news on your favorite Falcon teams.
