Falcons Hot Streak Continues in Statement Win Over WT

Clayton Roberts continues to be a magician with the ball for UT Permian Basin Football as he threw for a program record six touchdown passes as the Falcons defeated West Texas A&M 42-31 Saturday night.  Roberts hit four different receivers for scores and tossed 281 yards as the Falcons beat the Buffs for the first time in program history.  The junior signal caller came within one touchdown pass of tying the Lone Star Conference single game record of seven.

The Falcon offense was on from the first whistle of the night driving a methodical 16 plays for 58 yards to get on the board first.  The Falcons faced fourth-and-one on the Buff 20, but Nathan Tilford barreled forward for the first.  Facing third-and-goal, Roberts found Matt Zubiate over the middle for a seven-yard touchdown.

After the Buffs tied the score, the Falcons scored much more quickly the second time around.  Roberts stood in the pocket and took a hit but found MJ Link, who showed some quick footwork and broke the ankles of a Buff defender for a 53-yard touchdown.

With the score tied again, the Falcon offense continued to overpower the Buff defense, this time to the tune of a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped off by a Roberts pass to Tilford from 10 yards out and the Falcons went into the half up 21-17.

Starting the second half with the ball, the Falcons picked up right where they left off.  On the second play from scrimmage, Roberts once again found Link for a 44-yard score.  They added to the lead again on their next drive when Roberts found Jordan Smart for the 13-yard touchdown.  The Falcon defense squashed any realistic chance of a Buff comeback on the next drive with an interception by Donta Stuart

The offense was humming as the Falcons refused to be stopped on the next drive.  It was Roberts once again to Smart, this time from 26 yards out for the 42-17 lead.  Trent Ward had a sensational diving interception in the end zone that put the stamp on the win.  The Buffs added two late touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons hung on for the win.

Link finished the night with eight catches for 140 yards and a pair of scores.  Smart had five catches for 72 yards and two touchdowns.  John O'Kelley led the defensive effort with eight tackles including one for a loss.
