Davis Finds Form Late at D1 Abilene Christian

Freshman Jayvon Davis broke out in a huge way Saturday night with 57 yards rushing and a touchdown on just 10 carries against Division I opponent Abilene Christian.  Davis and UT Permian Basin Football combined for 110 yards on the ground as the Falcons faced their first Division I opponent since 2018.

The Falcons led early as the game started as a defensive battle.  They won the toss and deferred forcing a punt by the Wildcats.  The teams traded possessions, able to gain little ground until Clayton Roberts found MJ Link on a 23-yard strike setting the Falcons up in scoring position.  The drive stalled but Carson Roberts was able to bang through a 35-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Turnovers hurt the Falcons late in the first half.  A late fumble and an interception cost the Falcons as the Wildcats scored 24 points in the final four minutes to take a 27-3 lead into the locker room.  Both defenses continued to be the story out of the half as neither team could find momentum.  The Wildcats had the best chance to score in the quarter, but Jaques Tyler got a hand in the way and blocked a 34-yard field goal attempt.

After forcing a punt to start the fourth quarter the Falcons got the ball back on their own 20.  A reverse to Kobe Robinson for 23 yards set the Falcons up with great field position.  The Falcons capped off the drive on the ground as freshman Jayvon Davis was able to turn a corner and sneak inside the pylon for a 13-yard touchdown run, the first of his career.  The Wildcats added a late touchdown for the 34-9 final.

The defense held the Wildcats to just 163 yards in the air and 1-for-9 on third downs.  In back-up duty, Suddin Sapien finished 7-for-11 for 50 yards.  Link finished as the team's leading receiver with five catches for 53 yards. Defensively Miquon Mayes and Donta Stuart had 12 tackles each while John O'Kelley had the lone sack.

The Falcons take to the road next weekend to resume Lone Star Conference play as they'll take on Western New Mexico.  Download the UTPB Athletics App for the latest updates all season long.
