| Box Score 2 Forced to move back due to last week's ice storm, UT Permian Basin Tennis faced some of its stiffest competition yet, playing Division I's Air Force Academy then taking on nationally-ranked Seward County Community College.
 
The Women opened the weekend against Air Force, who went 10-4 last season.  Lore Mewis and Krystal Smith played some of their best tennis, nearly taking a set off their opponents.  The doubles team of Anaya Singh and Lea Mjertan battled tough, playing for the first time together, before falling. 
 
"I was happy to see Anaya get on the court," said Head Coach Stan Anderson.  "All the women competed hard and we were close in every game.  It came down to experience as all three of our doubles teams were playing together for the first time.  As we move forward and get more experience, we'll win more of these close games.  The weather didn't allow us to get the continuity we wanted heading into these matches.  The team is buying in and gaining confidence.  We have played a very difficult schedule to this point, facing three Division I teams and a top-20 Division II team.  We'll be ready for conference play next week."
 
The Women wrapped up the weekend against nationally-ranked Seward County CC, taking the doubles point and one singles match.  Singh was perfect, winning her doubles and singles matches.  She paired with Mjertan to take the No. 2 doubles match 6-3.  Sofia Rischmagui and Monika Cantu combined to win a tight No. 3 doubles match 7-6 to grab the doubles point.  Singh won her singles match in a tightly contested three-set battle.  Mewis took the No. 1 singles match to a third set, falling in a tiebreaker. 
 
"Sofia and Monika played their best tennis when it counted," said Anderson.  "They took control of the match without dropping a point in the tiebreaker.  I'm so proud of all of them, they are getting better every match.  I know that a big win is coming for them soon.  I'm extremely proud of Anaya who's been battling an injury all year.  For her to come out and play four matches shows the kind of heart she has, she's a gamer.  I've been asking more and more of her the last few weeks and she's showing the kind of player she is."
 
The Men also faced nationally-ranked Seward County CC, taking three points in a close match.  Paul Schweiger and Aditya Iyer combined for the 6-3 No. 1 doubles victory to start the day.  Schweiger continued the hot play winning his singles match in three sets.  Lorenzo Lopes cruised to a two-set victory to close out the day.
 
"I am very happy with how Paul and Aditya played.  Paul is coming off an injury that sidelined him a while and it was the first time they teamed up," said Anderson.  "They showed why they are our No. 1 doubles team.  I really like how aggressive they were in the match, I have been looking for the right combination at the one and they showed me they can take care of business.  Singles play was close.  Lorenzo is really improving.  He is starting to play matches like he always has at practice and is gaining confidence.  Paul played his best tennis, showing great heart and determination in his win.  I have never coached a more intense player.  The people watching the match got to witness something special."
