UT Permian Basin Women's Basketball's offense distributed the ball efficiently on Thursday as three Falcons finished in double figures in scoring. Freshman
Kamari Portalis led the way with 11 points while
Avalon Munoz and
Alexus Quaadman added in 10 against Texas A&M – Kingsville.
Both offenses came out firing with Munoz scoring five points early to give the Falcons a three-point lead. The Javelinas went on a run from there but not before the Falcons closed the quarter on a five-point run. The Falcons made their move offensively in the second quarter. Four points from
Alexus Wykoff and a layup by Quaadman gave the Falcons their first lead since early in the contest. They pushed the lead to five before heading into the half up 31-27.
An early run to start the second half gave the Falcons a seven-point lead, their largest of the contest. A five-minute scoring drought allowed the Javelinas to climb back into the game and retake the lead.
Morgan Helgesen hit a late jumper to keep the deficit at three heading into the fourth. In the fourth quarter, the Falcons trimmed the deficit down to two, but the Javelinas hit their free throws down the stretch for the 61-53 final.
Munoz led all players with seven rebounds, including four on the offensive end. The Falcons outrebounded the Javelinas 41-36. Once again, the defense was a turnover machine forcing 20, but the Javelinas connected on 11 threes to keep them in the contest.
The Falcons head to the border to take on Texas A&M International this Saturday at 1 PM. Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
