Falcons Finish Opening Weekend with 22 Victories Against Top Flight Opponents

9/26/2020 7:46:00 PM

UT Permian Basin Tennis came out firing on Saturday, taking 11 matches to wrap-up the UTPB Invitational at Bush Tennis Center in Midland.

The men had a tremendous day combining for eight wins across singles and doubles.  Paul Schwieger, Antonio Simo, Carlo Lorente, and Vassanth Mathan all picked up singles wins, with Simo coming back from down a set for the victory.  Mathan won both of his matches yesterday to go 3-0 on the weekend.  Schwieger and Bjorgvin Julisson finished the event 2-1 in singles.

Schwieger and Julisson teamed up for an impressive win in doubles, as did Simo and Mathan.  The duo of Diego Martinez and Gage Kemp picked up a pair of doubles wins against a pair of Dallas Baptist opponents.

"The guys were much more focused today," said Head Coach Stan Anderson. "Paul (Schwieger) showed great leadership by his play and support for his teammates. Toni (Simo) played outstanding today. He fought back from being a set down in singles and pulled out a win against a very good player from Dallas Baptist. His future is extremely bright, and I know he will continue to work hard in the coming weeks in preparation for the Lone Star Conference singles tournament next month."

The Falcons picked up a win in singles by Lore Mewis, the first collegiate win of her career.  The duos of Melissa Ariza and Lea Mjertan and Mariah and Maria Briones each picked up a doubles win as well.

"The women's team showed some great determination today," said Anderson. "Lore Mewis got her first college win today. I knew she would play better after having some freshman nerves on Friday. Lore's singles win was the type of dominate play I know she is capable of. She will be a very special player for us this year and throughout her career. Lore also teamed up with fellow freshman Sofia Rischmagui to push a very talented DBU doubles team to the limit, before coming up just short. We need to work on finishing points and closing out games moving forward."

The Falcons ended the weekend with 22 wins on the weekend with four freshmen picking up their first career victories.
