UTPB Men's Basketball's run at the 2014 Heartland Conference Championships came to an end Saturday night as the Falcons lost 76-72 in the finals to Texas A&M International at the Stubblefield Center in Fort Smith, Ark.
Trailing in the final minutes, UTPB had a chance to replicate its success from the night before. Down by four,
Andre Rieder knocked down a three with just seven seconds remaining to cut the Dustdevils lead to one.
Fouled on the ensuing possession, Matthew Culliver Jr. sunk a pair at the line to put TAMIU on top by three with three seconds on the clock.Â
The Falcons were unable to get a shot off in an attempt to tie the game, turning over possession and sending Culliver Jr. back to the line with one second remaining where he locked up the TAMIU win by making his first of two attempts.
Madison Turner carried the Falcons in the first half, leading all UTPB players with 15 points and hitting 3-of-4 from behind the arc to help the team to a 23-12 lead halfway through the opening half.
Texas A&M International fought back, erasing the gap and taking the lead with a 20-2 run at the end of the first half and went into halftime holding a four-point, 43-39 advantage.
UTPB responded when the Dustdevils went on top by their largest lead of the night early in the second half, scoring seven straight to eliminate TAMIUs seven-point lead and tie the game at 48-48.
A Turner layup halfway through the second put UTPB back in the lead for a minute, and
Dwayne Soders completed a three-point play with 4:35 remaining to give the Falcons a 64-61 advantage.
A pair at the line from Turner increased the lead to 66-61, but Texas A&M International scored the next 10 points in grabbing the lead for the final time.
Turner led all scorers in the game with a season-high 30 points on 10-17 shooting from the field to go with six rebounds and five assists.Â
