The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's and women's cross country teams competed against the entire field of Heartland Conference squads at the 2012 conference championships Saturday morning in Wichita, Kan. The UTPB women's team took third place out of the field of seven teams, its highest finish ever at the conference championships, with the men's squad finishing fourth out of six teams.
Carlos Ahkothe continued his dominance on the men's side, setting a new school record in the 8k race with a second place overall finish of 25:41.60. Cody Valenzuela was under a minute and a half behind as the second UTPB finisher, scoring a 14th overall finish in 27:16.20. Brandon Summers ran the race in 28:03.90 to earn a 22nd place result and Joey Escalante was six spots back in 28th, running in 29:12.80, with Nick Escalante two spots behind in 30th in 29:34.65.
Kylie Bourquin led the UTPB women's team with a 12th place finish in the 6k event, clocking in at 24:18.60. Sarahi Benavides was three spots back in 15th, running in 24:30.05. Maria Fernandez crossed the line two spots back, timing in at 24:34.60 to place 17th. Isabel Bahena scored a 23rd overall finish with a time of 24:55.90. Tiffany Barerra was 27th overall, completing the course in 25:07.85. Gaby Valeriano was 30th in 25:31.60 and was followed by Leslie Villa one spot back in 31st in 25:33.75. Vanessa Banman wrapped up the UT-Permian Basin contingent with a time of 26:44.85 in 43rd.
Ahkothe was named All-Conference while Valenzuela, Bourquin and Benavides each garnered all-conference honorable mention accolades.
