The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team scored early and often, taking a 12-2 game-shortened victory over Panhandle State. The win closed out the regular season for the 2011 Falcons and the collegiate careers of 11 seniors.
The game was scheduled for nine innings, but because of the 10-run rule, the game was stopped after
Andy Quiring doubled to right center to score
Hugo Hernandez from second, giving UTPB its 12
th run of the game and enough to close out the Aggies.
UTPB scored at least one run in all but the third inning including two in the first, three in the second and four in the fourth. Falcon starter
Felix Cardenas went four innings, allowing just three hits and an unearned run while striking out four in picking up his fifth win of the year.
Quiring was an offensive force for the Falcons as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and four runs batted in.
Chandler Goode was nearly as good with two hits, two runs scored and drove in a run. Seven different players picked up at least one hit for the Falcons, while the trio of Cardenas,
Ryan Escarcega and
Daniel Bernal held the Aggies to just four hits on the day. Escarcega tossed two innings, giving up one run off one hit while Bernal pitched one inning without giving up a hit and striking out one.
The Falcons, who will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Heartland Conference Tournament in San Antonio, will take on No. 2 seed St. Edward's on Thursday at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the No. 4 seed Texas A&M International and top-seeded St. Mary's in the semifinal game on Friday.
