A five-run eighth inning broke open a 1-1 tie to eventually give The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team a 6-2 win over Incarnate Word for its fifth-straight victory.
Travis Wilcox was impressive both at the plate and on the mound as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He also pitched 7.1 innings where he gave up an unearned run off nine hits while striking out three in the no-decision.
Chandler Goode picked up two hits in the win as well as the game-tying RBI in the fifth with a single up the middle.
Incarnate Word took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Leroy Urbina singled up the middle to score Matt Flores, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.
Ryan Giacomini started the rally in the fifth for UTPB with a single to center before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Stephen Hrebicek. Goode's single up the middle tied the game at one before
Andy Quiring kept the rally alive with a single. An infield pop-up ended the inning as the Falcons had three hits in the frame.
The score would stay tied until the Falcons busted out for three more hits in the eight and took advantage of a wild pitch that scored two runs. Goode led off the inning with a single through the left side before Quiring was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Jeremy Miller broke the 1-1 tie with a single to left.
With runners on second and third,
Brantley Miller dropped a bunt down the first base line where first baseman Matt Roohan attempted to throw out Wilcox at the plate, but Wilcox ran back to third allowing Miller to reach safely at first.
Garrett Wolff was hit by a pitch to score
Jeremy Miller before
Brantley Miller and Wilcox scored on a wild pitch.
The five runs in the inning was more than enough for
Ryan Escarcega, who picked up his first win of the season after tossing 1.2 innings where he gave up one run off one hit while striking out one.
UTPB will try to keep its win streak alive when the Falcons host Texas A&M International in a three-game Heartland Conference series Friday and Saturday.
