box score

FORT SMITH, Ark.
– Whitney Lee and Coby Hill combined for 50 points while the Lions shot 64 percent from the field to take a 97-72 win over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's basketball team, snapping the Falcons' five-game win streak.

While Arkansas-Fort Smith was red-hot from the field, the Falcons had trouble shooting the ball as they hit just 32.5 percent of their shots, marking UTPB's second-lowest shooting percentage of the season. Ironically, the Lions held the Falcons to just 28 percent from the field in their first meeting earlier this year in Odessa.

Lee was dominant for the Lions, putting in a game-high 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting while knocking down 9-of-11 free throws to go along with 13 rebounds. Hill put in 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the one-two punch proved to be too much for the Falcons. Arkansas-Fort Smith made a living inside, scoring 38 points in the paint, while holding UTPB to just six, forcing it to shoot from the outside.

The Lions never trailed in the game as Hill gave them a 2-0 lead on a layup less than a minute into the contest. They would jump out to a 9-0 advantage before Teisha King scored UTPB's first points on a jumper nearly four minutes into the game. The Falcons pulled within three on three different occasions including a three-pointer by Lauren Unger with 9:24 to go before the break to make it 24-21. The momentum would not last long as the Lions rattled off a 13-2 run to lead 37-23 with 5:40 to go. They would eventually take a 43-32 halftime advantage.

The Falcons would trail by 14 in the second half with just over five minutes played in the period, but a 13-6 run pulled them within seven (58-51) with 11:13 to play after Andrea Chavez drained a three-pointer.

Like the first half, the Lions turned the momentum in their favor after a 19-6 burst gave them a commanding 77-57 lead, their largest of the game, with just under six minutes to play. They would continue their offensive onslaught the rest of the way, handing UTPB its most lopsided loss of the season.

Tammy Acosta scored a team-high 19 points after knocking down five three-pointers, while Unger nailed four from downtown for 12 points. As a team, the Falcons attempted 44 three's, knocking down 13.

The Falcons fell to 17-6 overall and will return home for key Heartland Conference games against Panhandle State on Thursday and Newman on Saturday. The Newman matchup features the top-two teams in the league as UTPB holds a half-game lead over the Jets.
