LAREDO – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's soccer team came through when it needed it most as
Hannah Dozier's lone goal lifted the Falcons to a 1-0 victory over Texas A&M International. With the win, UTPB secured the fourth and final seed in the upcoming Heartland Conference Women's Soccer Tournament to be played in Dallas.
Dozier, who leads the team and is tied for fourth in the league with eight goals on the season, put in the contest's only score of the afternoon at the 14:22 mark after taking a touch pass from
Kaylen Gerkey, which she rifled in from 20 yards out to the upper right corner of the goal.
While Dozier led the Falcons offensively, goal keeper
Alexis Frueh kept the Dustdevils out of the net the entire afternoon, picking up nine saves. A&M International out-shot UTPB 15-10, including 9-4 in shots on goal, but steady play by the Falcon defense helped them to their fourth win of the season.
UTPB will now take on regular season conference champion Dallas Baptist in the opening round of the tournament at 7 p.m. on Thursday on the Patriots' home field. In the other semifinal contest, No. 2 seed St. Edward's will face No. 3 seeded St. Mary's. The winner of each match will face off at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Tournament.
