LAREDO – Five different players scored in double-figures and a total of 12 players scored at least two points as the University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's basketball team took a 101-60 win over Barclay Christian in the first game of the 2010 La Posada Classic hosted by Texas A&M International.
The victory marks the first time this season the Falcons have won back-to-back games and did it on the hot shooting of freshman guard Eric Segert, who made 5-of-8 shots from the field, including 4-of-4 from behind the three-point line for a game and career-high 18 points.
For the second-straight contest, UTPB drained 10 3-pointers with Louis Crane and Luther Thomas knocking down two each, while Michael Akins and Ke'Andre Derrick had one each. Derrick finished with 16 points, while Thomas added 10.
Not only were the Falcons impressive on the offensive side of the ball, they dominated the rebounding category with a season-high 58 with Akins pulling down a season-high nine.
UTPB opened the game with an 11-0 run and held a double-digit lead for all but 16 seconds of the contest after that. The Falcons would close out the first half with a 14-7 run to lead 47-30 at the break.
The second half was much like the first as the Falcons had their offense in full gear, opening the period with a 15-2 run capped off with a layup by Klein Harper, who finished with six points, to lead 62-32 with 14:36 to play. They would hold at least a 28-point lead the rest of the way.
UTPB improved to 3-5 on the year and will take on Johnson & Wales tomorrow at 3 p.m. and will not return home until Jan. 2 when they host Angelo State at 4:30 p.m.
