AKUMAL, QUINTANA ROO, Mexico (September 29, 2026) – The University of Texas Permian Basin men's golf team finished in first place out of 10 teams at the DII Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya in Mexico. In addition, junior Dian Wilmot won individual medalist honors in a playoff, leading the Falcons to a sweep of both the team and individual titles.

The tournament was 54 rounds across three days at the par-72, 6980-yard course at Tulum County Club at PGA Riviera Maya.

The Falcons were one of 10 teams in the field, which included eight NCAA Division II South Central Regional squads, West Region representative Cal State East Bay and Team Mexico.

As a team, UTPB (294-295-299; 888; +24) was in second place after each of the first two rounds before overtaking No. 23 Colorado Mesa (289-298-303; 890; +26). The Falcons were five strokes behind the Mavericks after round one, two strokes behind after round two, and then won the tournament by two strokes over both CMU and UT Tyler (303-290-297; 890; +26) in a tie for second place.

This is the sixth tournament title for the Falcons in the last four seasons after winning their first two tournaments in program history in Hawaii in Fall 2023. Under current Head Coach Paul Chavez, the Falcons have won four tournaments since Fall 2024, including sweeping the team and individual medalist honors three times since Fall 2025.

Coach Chavez said, "This was an incredible win for our program. To put up very consistent scores on a PGA Tour level golf course is amazing. Then you throw in a strong field, and this definitely provides a huge confidence boost to our team moving forward."

Wilmot (73-72-68; 213; -3), a transfer to UTPB from Odessa College, was tied for fifth place after round one and tied for third place after round two (5 strokes off the lead heading into round 3), but made his move with a four-under-par during the final round. He tied with UT Tyler's Blake Harwell (72-68-73; 213; -3) before winning the playoff in one hole (Wilmot par; Harwell bogey).

In addition, Wilmot was tied for first in the tournament with 12 birdies, was tied for first in par-4 scoring (3.97; -1), was tied for fourth in par-5 scoring (4.83; -2), and was tied for eighth in par-3 scoring (3.00; E).

It was the first-ever collegiate win for Wilmot, who become the fifth-ever UTPB men's golfer to win a tournament. He joins Nizar Bourehim (2025-2027), Will Tate (2023-26), Sangha Park (2022-24) and Colton Hilburn (2020-22).

Wilmot said, "It feels good to get the win in my second NCAA Division II tournament start, and I am glad my performance helped the team win."

Coach Chavez spoke on Wilmot's performance, "Congratulations to Dian Wilmot on his first-ever collegiate victory. Four-under-par today was an awesome score. His play definitely sparked the rest of the team today."

Next was Laurent Beech (71-75-76; 222; +6), who was tied for first place after shooting one-under during round one, was tied for fifth place after round two, and finished alone in fourth place.

Ioan Rowe (73-73-78; 224; +8) was tied for fifth place after each of the first two rounds after shooting one-over during each of those rounds, and finished tied for sixth place overall.

Rounding out the lineup, Benson Diehm (79-75-77; 231; +15) finished tied for 29th and Nizar Bourehim (77-78-79; 234; +18) tied for 37th.

It was career win No. 163 for Coach Chavez between his time at UTPB and Odessa College, and was his fifth combined win in three seasons at UTPB (both men's & women's programs).

The Falcons' appearance in the Mexican Riviera was their second in as many years. They finished sixth in a 15-team field at last year's event with a 54-hole score of 913 (+49).

The team is back in action next week (Oct. 5-6) in Oklahoma for The Hrnciar, where the Falcons are the defending team and individual champions.
