MIDLAND, Texas (October 13, 2026) – The University of Texas Permian Basin men's golf team continued its Fall schedule this week at the inaugural University of Wyoming Tall City Classic hosted at the Midland Country Club in Midland, Texas. In the end, the Falcons finished in ninth place out of the 12 teams, ahead of three programs from the NCAA Division I ranks.
The Falcons were back in action for their fourth tournament of the season, staying in Texas for the second time. In addition, it was the only local tournament for the UTPB men's golf team this year.
The Falcons were one of 12 teams competing at the par-72, 7,354-yard course. Hosted by the University of Wyoming, the brand-new tournament brings Division I collegiate golf to the Permian Basin for the first time.
UTPB was coming off of back-to-back top-three finishes at the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya (1st place) and The Hrnciar (3rd place), but the competition this week was a little bit different.
In addition to the local schools (UTPB, Odessa College, Midland College) and two nationally-ranked junior college programs, the field of teams featured nine Division I programs. The full field of teams included: University of Wyoming, UT Permian Basin, UT Arlington, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Tarleton State, East Texas A&M, UM Kansas City, University of Hawai'i, Weber State, No. 3 (NJCAA) Odessa College, and No. 7 (NJCAA) Midland College.
UTPB (290-290-290; 870; +6) was the definition of consistency, shooting just two-over as a team during all three rounds. The Falcons finished ahead of East Texas A&M (286-286-299; 871; +7) in 10th place, Weber State (295-291-286; 872; +7) in 11th place, and Hawai'i (297-295-298; 890; +24) in 12th place. After shooting two-under during each of the first two rounds of the tournament, East Texas shot 11-over during the third round and dropped five spots on the team leaderboard. Meanwhile, the Falcons were able to hold off Weber State, which shot two-under during the final round.
UTPB Head Golf Coach
Paul Chavez said, "Obviously being an inaugural event, it was special for our players to be invited and be a part of history. Our guys represented our university with class and integrity and played some good golf, and now they have a taste of what it is like to play against DI competition. We are still striving to be the best we can be as a team."
Leading the Falcons for the third tournament in a row was
Dian Wilmot (70-72-70; 212; -4), who shot two rounds of two-under and another round of even-par and tied for 10th place out of 72 golfers. He was tied for sixth place after round one and tied for 12th after round two.
Ioan Rowe (74-73-71; 218; +2) continued his consistent play and improved his score during each round, culminating with a one-under-par during the final round to rise seven spots and tie for 31st.
"Dian and Ioan have again been our leaders all year and have played some tremendous golf week in and week out, and now it is time for everyone else to step up their game and become key contributors," added Coach Chavez.
Benson Diehm (74-69-76; 219; +3) shot UTPB's lowest score of the tournament during round two (-3), tied for the fourth lowest score of the round among all players, but could not keep it going during the final round. And improving his score of five strokes and rising 18 spots on the player leaderboard during round two (T18th), Diehm ultimately finished tied for 37th.
Laurent Beech (72-76-76; 224; +8) shot UTPB's second-lowest score during round one (even-par), was tied for 41st after round two at plus-four, and finished in a tie for 54th.
Gilbert Lujan (76-76-73; 225; +9) shot just one-over-par during the final round and rose four spots to finish 56th.
Lastly,
Quinn Robertson (76-82-80; 238; +22) played as an individual and finished 71st.
UTPB men's golf will be back in action in two weeks to finish off the Fall season at the NCAA West/South Central Region Preview hosted by St. Mary's University on Monday, October 26, to Tuesday, October 27, at the Dominion Country Club.
